Lucerne (shipwreck)
''Lucerne'' was a commercial schooner. In November 1886, she sank due to bad weather in Lake Superior, off Long Island in Chequamegon Bay. The site of the wreck was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. History ''Lucerne'' was launched on April 23, 1873. She was nearly long and reportedly cost $55,000 to build. On November 15, 1886, ''Lucerne'' was loaded with 1,200 tons of iron ore at her home port, Ashland, Wisconsin. The load was consigned to ''Little, Oglebay and Company'' of Cleveland, Ohio. After the delivery, the captain and crew began a voyage back to Ashland. With new canvas sails and a light wind blowing, all the signs pointed to a speedy voyage home. However, a November snowstorm on the lake began developing that night. On November 17 or 18, 1886, ''Lucerne'' succumbed to the violent storm, and sank off Long Island. Antoine Garaby De La Luzerne
Antoine de Garaby, sieur de Pierrepont, de La Luzerne et d'Étienville (28 October 1617 – 4 July 1679) was a French moralist. Garaby de La Luzerne was born in the family manor of La Besnardière at Montchaton near Coutances. He was the son of Bernard de Garaby and Françoise de Pierrepont, the sister of Hervé de Pierrepont, commander of the city and fortress of Granville for the king. Although diminutive, unattractive and malformed, his keen intelligence, amenities, and the subtleties of his mind, nonetheless made him an attractive character for nature had endowed him with the qualities of mind and heart while denying him physical beauty. Garaby received his early education at home, under Francis Dyens, to whose memory he dedicated two couplets and a few lines of Latin prose. Luzerne is a borough located north of Wilkes Barre in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,703 at the time of the 2020 census. History The community was first settled in 1807. It was later incorporated as a borough in 1882. Like Luzerne County, the borough was named after Chevalier de la Luzerne, a French diplomat.
