Strassen ( lb, Stroossen ) is a commune and town in central Luxembourg. It is part of the canton of Luxembourg. In 2016, Strassen's population counted 8500 citizens. Josy Barthel
Joseph ("Josy") Barthel (24 April 1927 – 7 July 1992) was a Luxembourgish athlete. He was the surprise winner of the Men's 1500 metres at the 1952 Summer Olympics, and the only athlete representing Luxembourg to have won a gold medal at the Olympics. Besides athletics, Barthel also led successful careers in both chemistry and politics. Biography Born in Mamer, Josy Barthel's abilities as a middle-distance runner were discovered during World War II. His first fame came by winning the 800 m at the Military World Championships in Berlin in 1947. The next year at Military World Championships in Brussels he won both 800 m and 1500 m. At the 1948 Summer Olympics in London, Barthel finished ninth at the 1500 m final. Then he won Student World Championships in 1949 (1500 m) and 1951 (800 m and 1500 m). Luxembourg's National Olympic Committee, the Luxembourg Olympic and Sporting Committee, was founded in 1912 and sent its first team to the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm. Only three athletes won medals competing for Luxembourg in the Summer Olympics: weightlifter Joseph Alzin, silver in 1920, and runner Josy Barthel, gold in 1952. In the late 20th-century, it was discovered that runner Michel Théato, whose medal was previously given to France, was actually Luxembourgish. Théato won the gold medal in the men's marathon. Luxembourg first competed at the Winter Olympic Games in 1928, and has taken part in a total of ten Winter Games. Thus, despite having been one of the earliest countries to take part, Luxembourg has competed in relatively few of the Games. André Hoffmann (born 18 October 1941, in Luxembourg City) is a Luxembourgish politician from the Left-wing politics, leftist the Left (Luxembourg), The Left grouping. He was formerly leader of the Communist Party of Luxembourg, Communist Party (KPL). He was a member of the Chamber of Deputies of Luxembourg, Chamber of Deputies, but resigned in 2000 to become ''Échevin (Luxembourg), échevin'' of Esch-sur-Alzette, being replaced in the Chamber by Aloyse Bisdorff. He remained on Esch-sur-Alzette communal council until 2008, when he was replaced by Marc Baum to allow Hoffmann to concentrate on the 2009 Luxembourgian legislative election, 2009 election to the Chamber of Deputies. Norbert Haupert (born 2 April 1940, in Schifflange) is a retired Luxembourgish athlete and currently a politician, sitting in the Chamber of Deputies for the Christian Social People's Party. Like Josy Barthel before him, Haupert spanned the divide between sport and politics by heading the Luxembourg Athletics Federation and the Luxembourgian Olympic and Sporting Committee. As an athlete, he ran middle distance, dominating Luxembourgian middle distance running in the early 1960s and twice doubling up to win both the 800 metres and 1500 metres at the Luxembourgian national championships.
