Edmund Law Lushington
Edmund Law Lushington (10 January 1811 – 13 July 1893) was a classical scholar, a professor of Greek, and Rector of the University of Glasgow. Life Edmund Law Lushington was born on 10 January 1811 in Singleton, Lancashire, England. He was the son of Edmund Henry Lushington of the Inner Temple, a judge in Ceylon, and his wife Sophia Phillips. He was educated at Charterhouse School and as a Greek scholar at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he became a close friend of Alfred Lord Tennyson in the late 1820s. A Fellow of Trinity College, Lushington went on to become a professor of Greek at the University of Glasgow (1837–74), where he was also later elected Lord Rector (1884–87). He died at Park House, Maidstone, on 13 July 1893. Family On 14 October 1842, he married Cecilia Tennyson, daughter of Reverend George Clayton Tennyson, and younger sister of Alfred Lord Tennyson, in Boxley, Kent, England. Henry Lushington
Henry Lushington (1812–1855) was an English colonial administrator, chief secretary to the government of Malta. He was a Cambridge Apostle. Life Lushington was born in Singleton, near Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire, 13 April 1812. His father, Edmund Henry Lushington, of Queens' College, Cambridge, B.A. 1787, M.A. 1790, was a puisne judge in Ceylon. Henry, the second son, was educated at Charterhouse School, 1823–8, and at the age of 15 was at the head of the school. He became a student of Trinity College, Cambridge in October 1829. In 1832, and again in 1833, he obtained the university's Porson Prize for Greek iambics. In 1834 he graduated B.A. as senior optime and with a first class in the classical tripos, and he proceeded M.A. in 1837. He was elected a fellow of his college in 1836. Charles Manners Lushington
Charles Manners Lushington (27 April 181927 November 1864) was an English Conservative politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1854 to 1857. Background and education Lushington was born on 27April 1819 at 4 Cleveland Square, Bayswater, West London, the youngest son of Stephen Rumbold Lushington and Anne Elizabeth, . He was educated at Eton College, Oriel College, Oxford, graduating in 1843 with a MA, and later elected Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford. He served in the East Kent Yeomanry Cavalry of which he became captain in November 1853. Political career He was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the borough of Canterbury at a by-election in August 1854, after the borough's writ of election had been suspended when a Royal Commission found that there had been extensive corruption. Franklin Lushington
Sir Franklin Lushington (4 January 1823 – 10 November 1901) was a British barrister and judge. He was Chief Magistrate of the Metropolitan Police Courts in London from 1899 until his death, in succession to Sir John Bridge. A member of the Lushington family, Franklin Lushington was the son of Edmund Henry Lushington and the brother of Henry Lushington. He was a member of the Supreme Council of Justice of the United States of the Ionian Islands, serving until 1858. Appointed a metropolitan magistrate at the Thames Magistrates' Court in 1869, he was transferred to Bow Street Magistrates' Court Bow Street Magistrates' Court became one of the most famous magistrates' court in England. Edward Lear
Edward Lear (12 May 1812 – 29 January 1888) was an English artist, illustrator, musician, author and poet, who is known mostly for his literary nonsense in poetry and prose and especially his limerick (poetry), limericks, a form he popularised. His principal areas of work as an artist were threefold: as a draughtsman employed to make illustrations of birds and animals; making coloured drawings during his journeys, which he reworked later, sometimes as plates for his travel books; and as a (minor) illustrator of Alfred, Lord Tennyson's poems. As an author, he is known principally for his popular nonsense collections of poems, songs, short stories, botanical drawings, recipes and alphabets. Godfrey Lushington
Sir Godfrey Lushington (8 March 1832 – 5 February 1907) was a British civil servant. A promoter of prison reform, Lushington served as Permanent Under-Secretary of State at the Home Office of the United Kingdom from 1886 to 1895. Lushington was born in Westminster, London, in 1832 to Stephen and Sarah Grace (''née'' Carr) Lushington; his twin brother was Vernon Lushington, Q.C., a county court judge. Educated at Rugby School and Balliol College, Oxford, he received his degree in 1854, and was President of the Oxford Union in 1853–1854 and was elected a fellow of All Souls in 1854. Two years later, in 1856, he wrote a "rather scathing essay on his Alma Mater" in ''The Oxford and Cambridge Magazine''. Kate Lushington is a Canadian theatre artist and teacher. From 1988 to 1993, Lushington was the artistic director of Nightwood Theatre. Lushington has worked with The Clichettes and is the writer of ''The Apocalypse Plays: A Legacy Project''. Vernon Lushington
Vernon Lushington KC, (8 March 1832 – 24 January 1912), was a Positivist, Deputy Judge Advocate General, Second Secretary to the Admiralty, and was associated with the Pre-Raphaelites. He was a Cambridge Apostle. Lushington was born in Westminster, London, to Stephen and Sarah Grace (née Carr) Lushington; his twin brother was Godfrey Lushington, KCB GCMG, Permanent Under- Secretary of State of the Home Office. He was educated at East India College, Haileybury, Hertfordshire, and Trinity College, Cambridge. Augustus Nathaniel Lushington
August Nathaniel Lushington (born August 1, 1869 - 1939) became the first African American to earn a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 1897. He practiced about two years in Philadelphia and worked as an instructor in Veterinary Sanitation and Hygiene at Bell Mead Industrial and Agricultural College at Rock Castle, West Virginia. Later, he practiced for much of his career in segregated Lynchburg, Virginia. He had memberships in the statistical reporter to the Bureau of Animal Industry, the United States Department of Agriculture, and the Lychburg Chamber of Commerce. College education His college education started when he married his wife Elizabeth Hubert from Antigua. Her west Indian friends helped Augustus enroll in Cornell University to study Agriculture.
