Luring Shadows (1920 Film)
''Luring Shadows'' is a silent 1920 American religious mystery film directed by Joseph Levering and written by Oscar E. Goebel and Condé B. Pallen. It was produced by the now defunct Catholic Art Association (not to be mistaken for the current Catholic Art Association) and Inter-Ocean Film Corporation, and stars Aida Horton. The film was the Catholic Art Association's fifth and second-to-last cinematic production. Plot J.H. Wareing, a New York City financier, is found murdered in his library after the robbery of several securities and a necklace. Suspicion points to the butler, Jason, to whom Wareing had shown the necklace the night before. Wareing's daughter, Florence, is also a suspect and therefore denied her father's estate. Over the course of the investigation, Wareing's daughter Florence works with a little girl named Mary (Aida Horton) who lives with a professional burglar named Bill, another suspect. Condé Benoist Pallen
Condé Benoist Pallen (December 5, 1858 – May 26, 1929) was an American Roman Catholic, Catholic editor and author. Biography Pallen was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1858. His father, Montrose A. Pallen, was a physician who was a native of Mississippi. His mother, Anne Benoist Pallen, was a member of an old French American, French family in St. Louis. He graduated from Georgetown University in 1880 and received a master's degree from Georgetown in 1883 and a Ph.D. from Saint Louis University in 1885. In 1896, Georgetown awarded him an honorary degree, the LL.D. Pallen died in New York City on May 26, 1929, after suffering from arteriosclerosis. His remains were buried in a family plot at a cemetery in St. Louis. Works He was editor of ''Church Progress'' and the ''Catholic World'' from 1887 to 1897. The Catholic Art Association (CAA) was founded in 1937 by Esther Newport, Sister Esther Newport as an organization of artists, art educators and others interested in Catholic art and its philosophy. The CAA published the ''Catholic Art Quarterly'', sponsored annual conventions, and hosted workshops until the organization dwindled and eventually dissolved in 1970. History In 1936, Sister Esther Newport saw a need for improved art education in Catholic schools and for a set of standards regarding Roman Catholic art, ecclesiastical art. She drew up an initial proposal for a Catholic College Art Association that year but did not find much support at that time. ''Aida'' (or ''Aïda'', ) is an opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto by Antonio Ghislanzoni. Set in the Old Kingdom of Egypt, it was commissioned by Cairo's Khedivial Opera House and had its première there on 24 December 1871, in a performance conducted by Giovanni Bottesini. Today the work holds a central place in the operatic canon, receiving performances every year around the world; at New York's Metropolitan Opera alone, ''Aida'' has been sung more than 1,100 times since 1886. A séance or seance (; ) is an attempt to communicate with spirits. The word ''séance'' comes from the French word for "session", from the Old French ''seoir'', "to sit". In French, the word's meaning is quite general: one may, for example, speak of "''une séance de cinéma''" ("a movie session"). In English, however, the word came to be used specifically for a meeting of people who are gathered to receive messages from ghosts or to listen to a spirit medium discourse with or relay messages from spirits.
