Lullaby (1929 Film)
''Lullaby'' is a 1929 American silent drama film directed by Boris Deutsch and starring Michael Visaroff, and Riva Segal. In Lullaby there is not only a deeply realistic plot that is investigated by the director with a skilled use of light and close-up but also a sort of dream plot that lives in the interiority of the female protagonist represented through faces of demons tormenting her sleep and cubist alteration of the cityscape realized using Deutsch's paintings. In the development of the film the two planes, the real one and the dream one, merge each other and the reality for the female protagonist is one that embraces both sphere of matter and spirit. Silent Film
A silent film is a film with no synchronized recorded sound (or more generally, no audible dialogue). Though silent films convey narrative and emotion visually, various plot elements (such as a setting or era) or key lines of dialogue may, when necessary, be conveyed by the use of title cards. The term "silent film" is something of a misnomer, as these films were almost always accompanied by live sounds. During the silent era that existed from the mid-1890s to the late 1920s, a pianist, theater organist—or even, in large cities, a small orchestra—would often play music to accompany the films. Pianists and organists would play either from sheet music, or improvisation. Sometimes a person would even narrate the inter-title cards for the audience. Boris Deutsch
Boris Deutsch (1892–1978) was a naturalized American painter. Biography Boris Deutsch, a figurative and expressionist painter, born from a Jewish family in Krasnogorka shtetl, then part of the Russian Empire, was educated at the Bloom Academy of Fine Arts, Riga, and completed postgraduate work in Berlin. With the outbreak of the World War I he was drafted in Russian army with the risk of dying so his mother helped him to desert with false identity papers. He went first to Harbin in China and then in Japan. From Japan he came to United States in 1916 landing in Seattle and then lived and painted in Los Angeles. In that city he joined the group of artists called "The Art Students' League" that included: Stanton Macdonald-Wright, Ben Berlin, John Decker, Ejnar Hansen, John Barrymore, Sadakichi Hartmann and Val Costello. Michael Visaroff
Michael Simeon Visaroff (December 18, 1889 – February 27, 1951) was a Russian American film character actor. Biography Visaroff was born Mikhail Semenonovich Vizarov (Russian: Михаил Семёнович Визаров) in Moscow, Russia. He was a graduate of the Russian Principal Dramatic School. Visaroff started his career on stage: In July 1922, Visaroff came to the United States with a group from the Kamerny Theatre in Moscow. With a 14-week leave of absence from Russia, the group planned to present 12 plays, each lasting one week, in a Broadway theater. He eventually made the transition to film, appearing in more than 110 films between 1925 and 1952. Alexandr Hackenschmied, born Alexander Siegfried George Hackenschmied, known later as Alexander Hammid (17 December 1907, Linz – 26 July 2004, New York City) was a Czech-American photographer, film director, cinematographer and film editor. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1938 and became involved in American avant-garde cinema. He is best known for three films: '' Crisis'' (1939), ''Meshes of the Afternoon'' (1943) and ''To Be Alive!'' He is particularly known for directing the German silent film ''The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari'' and a succession of other German Expressionism, expressionist films.
