Lula Côrtes
Luiz Augusto Martins Côrtes, better known as Lula Côrtes (9 May 1951 – 26 March 2011), was a Brazilian musician, best remembered for his collaboration with Zé Ramalho on the 1975 album ''Paêbirú''. He released several albums, including ''Satwa'' (1973) and ''Rosa de Sangue'' (1980). He worked with Ramalho on other albums including his 1978 debut, ''Zé Ramalho'', '' De Gosto de Água e de Amigos'' in 1985 and '' Cidades e Lendas'' in 1996. Death Lula Côrtes died on 26 March 2011, in Recife, Brazil from throat cancer at the age of 61. Pernambuco () is a state of Brazil, located in the Northeast region of the country. Zé Ramalho (born José Ramalho Neto on October 3, 1949 – Brejo do Cruz, Paraíba, Brazil) is a Brazilian composer and performer. Zé Ramalho has collaborated with various major Brazilian musicians, including Vanusa, Geraldo Azevedo and Alceu Valença to name a few. Zé Ramalho is also the first cousin of Elba Ramalho, a well known Brazilian composer and performer. As with many musicians back in his younger days, he was first influenced by rock and roll; however, at the age of 20, his music took a more Northeastern Brazilian approach. ''Paêbirú'' is an album by Brazilian artists Lula Côrtes and Zé Ramalho. The album was originally released in 1975 in music, 1975 and reissued in 2005 on Shadoks Music and later on by Mr. Bongo UK, in a very high quality Vinyl and CD Edition. Allegedly, almost all of the original copies of the album were destroyed in a river flood, making it incredibly hard to find. A copy of this LP may worth Brazilian real, R$15.000,00 (about United States Dollar, US$7,500.00) Zé Ramalho doesn't consider it as a work by him, so much that he is celebrating 35 years of career in 2012 (which marks 35 years of the release of his first solo album), and not in 2010. Since its reissue, it has been widely acknowledged as a lost gem of the Brazilian psychedelic rock, psychedelic movement of the 1960s and 1970s. ''Zé Ramalho'' is the debut album (if ''Paêbirú'' is not taken into account) by Zé Ramalho, the artist of same name, released in 1978. It features two great hits of his career: "Chão de Giz" and "Avôhai". Patrick Moraz, keyboardist of the band Yes (band), Yes, guest appeared in the track "Avôhai". The CD was re-released in 2003 with five bonus tracks. Background The songs of the album were created during trips through the states of Paraíba and Pernambuco between 1975 and 1976, when Ramalho was studying medicine at the Federal University of Paraíba. With these tracks, he left college and moved to Rio de Janeiro, where he approached several producers and businessmen to try and land a deal for his first solo album. However, he was rejected by all of them after showing them "Avôhai", "Vila do Sossego" and "Chão de Giz" until he met Jairo Pires, then president of CBS Records International, CBS, via which the album was released. ''Cidades e Lendas'' is the thirteenth solo album by Brazilian musician Zé Ramalho. It was released in 1996, after another four-year gap with no albums. It was released in a show at TUCA, São Paulo, around the time when his hit "Admirável Gado Novo" was featured at the soundtrack of Rede Globo's telenovela ''O Rei do Gado''. When comparing this work with his previous effort, '' Frevoador'', Ramalho said he was more satisfied this time because he had more time "to choose the best repertoire and invite the right people".
