Anna Lukens
Anna Lukens (October 29, 1844 – June 27, 1917) was an American physician from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania who practiced medicine, had leadership roles in hospitals and taught medicine. She was a vice-president of the New York Committee for the Prevention and State Regulation of Vice. Early life and education Lukens was born in Philadelphia on October 29, 1844. Between 1855 and 1870, her family were residents of Plymouth, Pennsylvania, and belonged to the Society of Friends. She was educated in Philadelphia at the Friends' Seminary. She studied at the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania under Dr. Hiram Corson beginning in 1867 and graduated from the school on March 13, 1870. While attending clinics in the Pennsylvania Hospital in November 1869, the first time women students attended the hospital, she and a Miss Brumall led a line of women students out of the hospital grounds amid hisses, jeers, insults, and thrown stones and mud from male students. Charles Lukens
Dr. Charles Lukens (born 1786), Charles Lloyd Lukens M.D., was the son of David and Sarah (Lloyd) Lukens of Gwynedd in Montgomery County. Charles met Rebecca Pennock, later known as Rebecca Lukens through her father Isaac Pennock. He was married in 1813. Charles and Rebecca had six children. All but two died; Isabella and Martha Pennock Lukens. Two of the buildings still stand today and are known as the " Terracina (Coatesville, Pennsylvania)" and the "VFW". Charles Lukens died in 1825, short after, his wife took over and added onto the steel mill. Rebecca later died and had her children's husbands take over. In 1890, the last of the family partnerships was dissolved, and the business organized as a stock company under the name "Lukens Iron & Steel Co". Dennis Lukens (born June 28, 1952) is an American professional soccer coach and former player. Playing career Lukens played college soccer for Springfield College, and professionally for the Boston Storm. He was the founder of the Boston Storm. Coaching career He began his career as a coach with Bridgewater State College between 1988 and 1991. Lukens has been on the coaching staff of clubs such as the California Cougars (where he was Assistant Coach), and he was also Head Coach of both the Boston Storm, and the Bay Area Seals. He has also been Head Coach of the Saint Lucia under-23 national team, as well as Krystal Kherson in the Ukrainian Second League. Lukens became the first American to coach soccer in the former Soviet Union, and the first to coach in the Ukraine. Lewis Alan Lukens is a retired American diplomat who served as the U.S. Ambassador to Senegal and Guinea-Bissau. His final assignment was as Deputy Chief of Mission of the U.S. Embassy in London. Rebecca Lukens (1794–1854), born Rebecca Webb Pennock, was an American businesswoman. She was the owner and manager of the iron and steel mill which became the Lukens Steel Company of Coatesville, Pennsylvania. Fortune Magazine called her "America's first female CEO of an industrial company" and its board of editors named her to the National Business Hall of Fame in 1994. History Rebecca was the daughter of Quaker Isaac Pennock who founded the Federal Slitting Mill near Coatesville about 1793. She grew up in the business often accompanying her father in the mill. She went to boarding school first at Westtown School, a nearby Quaker Boarding school, and then at the Wilmington School for Girls in Wilmington, Delaware, where among other subjects, she studied chemistry. Theodore Lukens
Theodore Parker Lukens (October 6, 1848 – July 1, 1918) was an American conservationist, real estate investor, civic leader, and forester who believed that burned over mountains could again be covered in timber which would protect watersheds. Lukens collected pine cones and seeds of different types and conducted experimental plantings on the mountain slopes above Pasadena, California. His perseverance earned him the name "Father of Forestry." Lukens established Henninger Flats tree nursery, which provided seed stock for an estimated 70,000 trees. He worked for the United States Forest Service and was acting supervisor of the San Gabriel Timberland Reserve and the San Bernardino Forest Reserve in 1906. The Lukens Historic District encompasses four properties in Coatesville, Pennsylvania associated with the 19th and early 20th-century history of the Lukens Steel Company and the family of Rebecca Lukens (1794–1854). Lukens was the first woman to head a major industrial firm in the United States, and played a leading role in the development of the American steel industry. Mount Lukens is a mountain peak of the San Gabriel Mountains, in Los Angeles County, Southern California. Geography It is in the Sunland-Tujunga community within the northeast corner of the city of Los Angeles, above the Crescenta Valley. The summit, at in elevation, is the highest point within the city limits. The summit's elevation makes Los Angeles the largest city with the highest and lowest (sea level) elevation difference in the country.
