Luke White (died 1824)
Luke White (circa 1740 or 1750 – 25 February 1824) was an Irish bookseller, operator of a lottery and Whig politician. He started as an impecunious book dealer, first in the streets of Belfast, then from 1778 at an auction house in Dublin buying and reselling around the country. By 1798, during the Irish Rebellion, he helped the Irish government with a loan of 1 million pounds (at £65 per £100 share at 5%). He then purchased Luttrellstown Castle from Henry Luttrell, 2nd Earl of Carhampton in 1800, and changed its name to Woodlands to eradicate the memory of its previous owner. White was High Sheriff of County Dublin for 1804 and High Sheriff of Longford for 1806. He entered the British House of Commons for Leitrim in 1818 and sat as Member of Parliament (MP) for it until his death in 1824. Luke White (of Rathcline)
Luke White (jr.) was the son of Irish bookseller, lottery operator and Member of Parliament for County Leitrim Luke White (sr.). Born before 1789, Luke White junior stood for election as MP for County Longford on a number of occasions, initially as a Whig and later as a supporter of Daniel O'Connell's Irish nationalist Repeal Association. After winning election in 1832, 1835 and 1841 his victories were overturned within months by committees of inquiry by the House of Commons and the seat handed over to his political opponents. He did, however, serve the full parliamentary term from 1837 to 1841. He did not contest any further elections and died in 1854. Luke White, 2nd Baron Annaly
Luke White, 2nd Baron Annaly KP (26 September 1829 – 16 March 1888), was an Anglo-Irish Liberal politician. Annaly was the son of Henry White, 1st Baron Annaly, and his wife Ellen (née Dempster), and was educated at Eton. He served in the British Army and achieved the rank of captain in the 13th Light Dragoons and Lieutenant-Colonel in the Longford Rifles. In 1859 he was returned to Parliament for County Clare however unseated by petition the following year, and then represented County Longford from 1861 to 1862 and Kidderminster from 1862 to 1865. Annaly served in the Liberal administration of Lord Palmerston as a Junior Lord of the Treasury between 1862 and 1866. From 1868 to 1873 he was State Steward to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland the Earl Spencer. He also held the honorary positions of Sheriff of County Dublin in 1861 and of County Longford in 1871 and Lord-Lieutenant of County Longford from 1873 to 1874. Luke White, 5th Baron Annaly
Luke Robert White, 5th Baron Annaly (15 March 1927 – 30 September 1990), was an English first-class cricketer. Annaly was a good schoolboy cricketer at Eton College and made a century at Lord's for a Public Schools team against a Lord's XI in 1944. He made his first-class debut for an England team in the third of the 1945 Victory Tests against the Australian Services XI, sharing a partnership of 55 with Len Hutton. Annaly played three first-class matches for Middlesex between 1946 and 1947 and made one appearance each for the Marylebone Cricket Club and the Royal Air Force. He also played club cricket for I Zingari. Luke White, 6th Baron Annaly
Luke Richard White, 6th Baron Annaly (born 1953), is a British hereditary peer and former Government Whip in the House of Lords, who sat on the Conservative benches. Background and education The only son of the first-class cricketer, the 5th Baron Annaly, and Lady Marye Isabel Pepys (died 1958), eldest daughter of the 7th Earl of Cottenham, his parents divorced in 1956 when he was two. Educated at Eton College and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, he later attended the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester, receiving a Diploma in Rural Estate Management. White joined the Royal Hussars becoming Lieutenant in 1974, and served in Northern Ireland. Lord Annaly succeeded upon his father's death on 30 September 1990 as a Baron in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, a title created in 1863. Sir Luke White (1845 – 17 August 1920) was an English Liberal Party politician. Early life White was born at Deighton, Yorkshire. He was a solicitor by profession, served as Justice of the Peace and was from 1897 Coroner for the East Riding of Yorkshire. Liberal agent In the 1886 general election he was agent to the Liberal candidate for the Buckrose constituency in the east of Yorkshire, William Alexander McArthur. At that election, McArthur was declared the victor over his Conservative opponent Christopher Sykes by a single vote, 3,742 to 3,741. McArthur and took his seat, but "on scrutiny" the seat was eventually awarded to Sykes.
