''Cool Hand Luke'' is a 1967 American prison drama film directed by Stuart Rosenberg, starring Paul Newman and featuring George Kennedy in an Oscar-winning performance. Newman stars in the title role as Luke, a prisoner in a Florida prison camp who refuses to submit to the system. Set in the early 1950s, it is based on Donn Pearce's 1965 novel '' Cool Hand Luke''. Roger Ebert called ''Cool Hand Luke'' an anti-establishment film shot during emerging popular opposition to the Vietnam War. Filming took place within California's San Joaquin River Delta region; the set, imitating a prison farm in the Deep South, was based on photographs and measurements made by a crew the filmmakers sent to a Road Prison in Gainesville, Florida. Luke Ray Jackson (born August 24, 1991) is an American professional baseball pitcher for the San Francisco Giants of Major League Baseball (MLB). He was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the first round, 45th overall, of the 2010 MLB draft. He made his MLB debut in 2015 with the Rangers, and has also played for the Atlanta Braves. Early life Jackson attended Calvary Christian Academy in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Luke Ryan Jackson (born November 6, 1981) is an American former professional basketball player in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the Oregon Ducks, earning consensus second-team All-American honors as a senior in 2004. He was selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round of the 2004 NBA draft with the 10th overall pick. After his playing career, Jackson was a head coach for the Northwest Christian University Beacons. High school and college career A four-year letterman in both basketball and baseball at Creswell High School, he was Oregon's Class AAA Basketball Player of the Year in 1998 and 2000. Lucious Brown Jackson (October 31, 1941 – October 12, 2022), also known as Luke Jackson, was an American professional basketball player. A power forward and center, he played for the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1964 to 1972. He was named an NBA All-Star in 1965, and won an NBA championship with the 76ers in 1967. Jackson also played for the U.S. national team in the 1964 Summer Olympics. Biography Amateur career Jackson was born on October 31, 1941, in San Marcos, Texas, and his family moved to Bastrop, Louisiana, when he was in high school because San Marcos would not allow him to play for the all-white basketball team. Luke Jackson (born 1 January 1985 in Hobart, Tasmania) is a professional Australian boxer with a current record of 19–2 (8 KOs). Jackson turned professional in 2013 and is the current title holder of the WBA Oceania, WBO Oriental and Australian Featherweight titles. A former Australian Institute of Sport boxing scholarship holder, he had an amateur record of 113–32 and won a bronze medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. He was named Team Captain for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi and represented Australia at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the lightweight division, again as Team Captain.
