Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand from the 1970s to the 1980s. Originally used to describe independent record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock or "Pop rock, guitar pop rock". One of the primary scenes of the movement was Dunedin, where Dunedin sound, a cultural scene based around a convergence of noise pop and jangle became popular among the city's University of Otago, large student population. Independent labels such as Flying Nun Records, Flying Nun began to promote the scene across New Zealand, inspiring key college rock bands in the United States such as Pavement (band), Pavement, Pixies (band), Pixies and R.E.M. Chris Staples is an American indie rock musician originally from Pensacola, Florida, long based in Seattle, Washington. He released ''Panama, Burned and Blistered'', '' Blackest Hair, Bluest Eyes'', ''Badlands'', and ''American Soft'' independently, before catching the attention of Seattle-based Barsuk Records, who re-released ''American Soft'' in 2014. Staples' second album on Barsuk, ''Golden Age'', was released in 2016. His next album, ''Holy Moly'', was released by Barsuk on June 28, 2019. In addition to his solo career, Staples has performed with Telekinesis, Josh Tillman, Rocky Votolato, Jeremy Enigk, and David Bazan. Mouse Fire is a U.S. independent dance-rock band from Tampa, Florida. They formed in 2006 and released their debut album ''Wooden Teeth'' in October 2007 to critical acclaim. Adeline Records was an American record label that was formed in Oakland, California in late 1997 and closed in August 2017. History In 1997, Adeline Records was founded by Billie Joe Armstrong, lead singer of Green Day, Screw 32's Doug Sangalang, Green Day guitarist Jason White, and professional skateboarder Jim Thiebaud. It was named after a street (Adeline Street) that runs from The Port of Oakland through West Oakland and Emeryville, terminating at Ward St and Shattuck Ave in Berkeley. Green Day's management company, Pat Magnarella Management, took over ownership of the label and ran it from the company's office in San Diego for many years. The label was closed in 2017. In July 2017, Pat Magnarella split from Green Day having managed them for over 21 years. Shortly thereafter Adeline Records abruptly closed down. Roy was an American folk and indie rock band. They were formed in 2002 in Tacoma, Washington. Background The group is composed of drummer Dave Verellen and guitarist Brian Cook from the then recently disbanded mathcore group Botch (the latter of which was also in These Arms are Snakes). Roy also features Dave Verellen's brother Ben Verellen of Harkonen on guitar and bassist Mike Cooper. After independently releasing three EPs, Roy signed to Fueled by Ramen and released their Matt Bayles-produced debut studio album ''Big City Sin and Small Town Redemption'' in 2004. The Out_Circuit is an indie rock/post-hardcore band/project by former Frodus co-frontman Nathan Burke currently signed to Lujo Records. The Out Circuit was originally based in Washington, DC but now resides in Seattle, Washington. History In 2000, following the breakup of his previous band Frodus, Nathan Burke formed The Out Circuit. After releasing an album (2003's ''Burn Your Scripts Boys'') and completing a couple of tours Burke decided to move the band across the country to Seattle, WA. Cool Hand Luke is a Christian band variously classified as alternative rock, progressive pop, indie, and emo and signed to Lujo Records on March 16, 2008. History Cool Hand Luke was formed by Brandon Morgan and Jason Hammil in 1998 while attending Middle Tennessee State University. The band's early music had a punk rock influence, although the range and scope of Cool Hand Luke's sound changed quickly after Mark Nicks joined the band. With Nicks on drums and lead vocals, Cool Hand Luke became known for playing with their backs to the crowd, lengthy, emotively expressive songs, and introspective lyrics.
