Luis Garcia (politician)
Luis R. García, Jr. is a Democratic politician from Florida and the retired Fire Department Chief of Miami Beach. He served three terms in the Florida House of Representatives, representing parts of Miami Beach, Miami, and Coral Gables from 2006 to 2012. Previously, he served for seven years on the Miami Beach City Commission. In 2012, rather than run for re-election to the House, García ran for the Miami-Dade County Commission in District 5. He was defeated by incumbent Bruno Barreiro in the general election, 52 to 48%. Early life and career García was born in Marianao, Cuba on December 8, 1945 and moved to Florida in 1960. He was certified as an E.M.T. in 1974, and as a paramedic in 1977. He earned his Associate of Science degree from Miami-Dade Community College in 1990 in Emergency Medical Services Management. Gustavo Barreiro
Gustavo "Gus" Alberto Barreiro (July 12, 1959 – August 16, 2019) was a Republican politician from Florida. He served four terms in the Florida House of Representatives, representing the 107th district in Miami-Dade County from 1998 to 2006. His district encompassed parts of Miami, Miami Beach, and Coral Gables. In 2012, Barreiro ran for the Florida House again, but lost the Republican primary in the 112th district to Alex Díaz de la Portilla, 59 to 41%. He died after a heart attack in 2019. Controversy Barreiro was terminated from his position as director of residential facilities for the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice in 2009 after an investigation revealed that he had downloaded 300 to 400 sexually explicit adult porn images onto his state-issued laptop. Larry Cretul is a Florida real estate broker and Republican politician who served as Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives from 2009 to 2010. He represented House District 22, based in Ocala, from 2002 to 2010. Cretul was subsequently elected Speaker Pro Tempore of the State House on November 18, 2008. On January 30, 2009, Speaker Ray Sansom announced he was "recusing" himself from his duties as Speaker due to a scandal over accepting an unadvertised job at Northwest Florida State College.
