Luigi Platé
Luigi "Gigi" Platé (3 September 1894 – 16 December 1975) was an Italian racing driver. Career Platé made his Grand Prix motor racing, Grand Prix debut in the 1925 Italian Grand Prix, driving a voiturette class Chiribiri 12/16, but retired on lap 13 due to mechanical failure. Platé also entered in some non-official/non-championship races in the 1920s and 1930s. Platé also made an unsuccessful Formula One entry in 1950 Italian Grand Prix, to drive a Talbot (automobile), Talbot 700, but he did not appear in the race weekend. He could have become the second oldest driver to enter a Grand Prix if he did (at the age of 56; the List of Formula One driver records#Oldest drivers to enter a race, record is currently held by Louis Chiron, who entered in 1958 Monaco Grand Prix at age 58 years and 288 days.) Grand Prix motor racing, a form of motorsport competition, has its roots in organised automobile racing that began in France as early as 1894. It quickly evolved from simple road races from one town to the next, to endurance tests for car and driver. Innovation and the drive of competition soon saw speeds exceeding , but because early races took place on open roads, accidents occurred frequently, resulting in deaths both of drivers and of spectators. A common abbreviation used for Grand Prix racing is "GP" or "GP racing". Grand Prix motor racing eventually evolved into formula racing, and one can regard Formula One as its direct descendant. 1950 Formula One Season
The 1950 Formula One season was the fourth season of the FIA's Formula One motor racing. It featured the inaugural FIA World Championship of Drivers,World Championship of Drivers, 1974 FIA Yearbook, Grey section, pages 118 & 119 which commenced on 13 May and ended on 3 September, as well as several non-championship races. The championship consisted of six Grand Prix races, each held in Europe and open to Formula One cars, plus the Indianapolis 500, which was run to AAA National Championship regulations. 1950 French Grand Prix
The 1950 French Grand Prix was a Formula One motor race held on 2 July 1950 at Reims-Gueux. It was race 6 of 7 in the 1950 World Championship of Drivers. The 64-lap race was won by Alfa Romeo driver Juan Manuel Fangio after he started from pole position. His teammate Luigi Fagioli finished second and Peter Whitehead took third in a privateer Ferrari. 1950 Indianapolis 500
The 34th International 500-Mile Sweepstakes was held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Tuesday, May 30, 1950. The event was part of the 1950 AAA National Championship Trail. It was also race 3 of 7 in the 1950 World Championship of Drivers and paid points towards the World Championship. The event, however, did not attract any European Formula One drivers for 1950. Giuseppe Farina originally planned to enter, but his car never arrived. The Indianapolis 500 would be included on the World Championship calendar through 1960.
