''Lui'' (; ) is a French adult-entertainment magazine created in November 1963 by Daniel Filipacchi, a fashion photographer turned publisher, Jacques Lanzmann, a jack of all trades turned novelist, and Frank Ténot, a press agent, pataphysician and jazz critic. The objective was to bring some charm "à la française" to the market of men's magazines, following the success of ''Playboy'' in the United States, launched just a decade before. France, indeed, in the first half of 20th century had an outstanding reputation for erotic publications, feeding also foreign market and inspiring also ersatz French-flavoured magazines abroad, when, for example, US publishers used French-sounding titles like ''Chère'' and ''Dreamé'' or placed tricolour flags on the covers, attempting to attract the casual buyer. Jacques Lanzmann
Jacques Lanzmann (4 May 1927 – 21 June 2006) was a French journalist, writer and lyricist. He is best known as a novelist and for his songwriting partnership with Jacques Dutronc. Early life Lanzmann spent the early part of his life in Auvergne. His parents, Paulette (Grobermann) and Armand Lanzmann, divorced shortly before World War II and, at the age of 12, he became a farmhand. Lanzmann was Jewish and, following the Battle of France, he, his mother and his siblings, pretended to be Moroccan Arabs to escape persecution by the Vichy regime. In 1943, Lanzmann and his elder brother Claude (later a noted documentary-maker) joined the Communist resistance. Jacques was taken captive by the Germans and was due to be executed by firing squad, but escaped. Frank Ténot (31 October 1925 – 8 January 2004) was a press agent, pataphysician and jazz critic. He managed a number of publications over the course of his long association with Daniel Filipacchi. He is best remembered as one of the founders of the influential radio show and magazine Salut les copains. Life He discovered jazz in Bordeaux in 1944, where he became president of the Hot Club of France. Based in Paris after World War II, he was employed at the Commission for Atomic Energy, and copy editor at the magazine ''Jazz Hot'', alongside Boris Vian with whom he discovers 'Pataphysics.
