Ludovica Thornam
Ludovica Anine Vilhelmine Augusta Thornam (30 November 1853 – 27 May 1896) was a Danish portrait and genre painter. Biography Ludovica Thornam was born at Horsens in Jutland, Denmark. She was the daughter of Ludvig Thornam (1819–79) and Anine Charlotte Frederikke Norup (1824–95). Her father was a senior teacher (''Overlærer''). Her sister, Emmy Thornam (1852–1935), also became a painter as well as a writer. She began her artistic training at Horsens Tekniske Skole in Horsens and, encouraged by her parents, went to Copenhagen where she studied with Vilhelm Kyhn (1819–1903) at his private school from 1873 to 1874. At that time, women were not permitted to attend The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, so she continued her studies with Herman Siegumfeldt (1833–1912) until 1877. The Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition (''Charlottenborg Forårsudstilling'') is an annual art exhibition in Copenhagen, Denmark. The event is held at the Charlottenborg Exhibition Building (''Kunsthal Charlottenborg''). Kunsthal Charlottenborg was erected in the former site of the Botanical Garden on a tract of land behind Charlottenborg Palace. Academicism
Academic art, or academicism or academism, is a style of painting and sculpture produced under the influence of European academies of art. Specifically, academic art is the art and artists influenced by the standards of the French Académie des Beaux-Arts, which was practiced under the movements of Neoclassicism and Romanticism, and the art that followed these two movements in the attempt to synthesize both of their styles, and which is best reflected by the paintings of William-Adolphe Bouguereau, Thomas Couture, and Hans Makart. The Women's Exhibition from the Past and Present ( da, Kvindernes Udstilling fra Fortid og Nutid) held in Copenhagen in 1895 was an art and culture exhibition for women from the Nordic countries. Inspired by the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago, it was designed to demonstrate how far Nordic women had advanced in the areas of education, employment and art. The first of its kind in Europe, it was considered a great success. Background The Chicago World's Fair in 1893 had impressed Danish visitors with its Woman's Building containing presentations of art and literature. Louis Héctor Leroux
Louis Hector Leroux (27 December 1829, Verdun - 11 November 1900, Angers) was a French painter in the academic style. Life Training as a wigmaker, he briefly worked in that profession in his birthplace at the same time as taking a drawing course in the town's art college, winning all its art prizes. These prizes earned Leroux a small bursary to go to Paris to study further, and he entered the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in 1849. He studied in the studio of François-Édouard Picot, producing copies of illustrations and museum works to supplement his income. He won the second prize in the Prix de Rome in 1857, staying in Rome from then until 1874. Shortly after his arrival in Rome the French state commissioned him to produce a painted copy of Titian's ''Sacred and Profane Love'', whilst he later also produced copies for the Gobelins manufactory.
