Ludo Loos
Ludo Loos (13 January 1955 – 1 March 2019) was a Belgian professional road bicycle racer. Career During the 1980 Tour de France Loos was able to escape in a solo breakaway during Stage 18, which was a major mountain stage. He was the first rider over all five climbs and won the stage finishing 5:19 ahead of the group of favorites which included his teammate Lucien Van Impe, Robert Alban, Joaquim Agostinho and eventual yellow jersey winner Joop Zoetemelk. Loos would finish eighteenth in that year's general classification and second in the mountains classification. In the 1985 Vuelta a España, Loos collided with a dog, and broke a neck vertebra. Essen, Belgium
Essen () is a town and municipality in the Belgian province of Antwerp. As of september 2022, the municipality had 19,029 inhabitants. The municipality is bordered on three sides by the Netherlands. Essen belongs to the electoral canton of Brecht and the judicial canton of Kapellen. The municipality is located in the Noorderkempen. Joop Zoetemelk
Hendrik Gerardus Joseph "Joop" Zoetemelk (; born 3 December 1946) is a Dutch former professional racing cyclist. He started and finished the Tour de France 16 times, which were both records when he retired. He also holds the distance record in Tour de France history with 62,885 km ridden. He won the 1979 Vuelta a España and the 1980 Tour de France. He finished the Tour in 8th, 5th, 4th (three times) and 2nd (six times) for a total of eleven top 5 finishes which is also a record. He was the first rider to wear the Tour de France's Polka Dot Jersey as the King of the Mountains and even though he never won this classification in the Tour de France, he did win it in the 1971 Vuelta a España and was considered one of the best climbers of his generation. The 40th Edition ''Vuelta a España'' (Tour of Spain), a long-distance bicycle stage race and one of the 3 grand tours, was held from 23 April to 12 May 1985. It consisted of 19 stages covering a total of 3,474 km. The race was won by Pedro Delgado of the Orbea cycling team. The mountains classification is a secondary competition in the Tour de France, that started in 1933. It is given to the rider that gains the most points for reaching mountain summits first. The leader of the classification is named the King of the Mountains, and since 1975 wears the polka dot jersey (french: maillot à pois rouges), a white jersey with red polka dots. History The first Tour de France crossed no mountain passes, but several lesser cols. The first was the col des Echarmeaux (), on the opening stage from Paris to Lyon, on what is now the old road from Autun to Lyon. General Classification In The Tour De France
The general classification is the most important classification, the one by which the winner of the Tour de France is determined. Since 1919, the leader of the general classification wears the yellow jersey (french: maillot jaune ). History The winner of the first Tour de France wore a green armband, not a yellow jersey. After the second Tour de France, the rules were changed, and the general classification was no longer calculated by time, but by points. This points system was kept until 1912, after which it changed back into the time classification. At that time, the leader still did not wear a yellow jersey. Joaquim Fernandes Agostinho, OIH (7 April 1943 – 10 May 1984) was a Portuguese professional bicycle racer. He was champion of Portugal in six successive years. He rode the Tour de France 13 times and finished all but once,''International Cycle Sport'', UK, 1984 winning on Alpe d'Huez in 1979, and finishing third twice. All total he finished in the top 10 of a Grand Tour eleven times, made three podiums and won a total of seven stages between the Vuelta and Tour.
