Lucy Stone Home Site
The Lucy Stone Home Site is a historic archeological site on Coy Hill Road in West Brookfield, Massachusetts. The site is owned and managed by The Trustees of Reservations, a non-profit land conservation and historic preservation organization, and is located within the Trustees' Rock House Reservation. The home site includes of forested land on the side of Coys Hill west of West Brookfield village. Although the farmhouse in which Lucy Stone (1818-1893) was born and married burned to the ground in 1950, its ruins are at the center of the property. The site has long been a memorial to Stone, an early and prominent activist for women's rights. The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2021. West Brookfield is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 3,833 at the 2020 census. Lucy Stone was born in West Brookfield, and George and Charles Merriam, the publishers of Webster's Dictionary, were raised there. The Trustees of Reservations is a non-profit land conservation and historic preservation organization dedicated to preserving natural and historical places in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It is the oldest land conservation nonprofit organization of its kind in the world and has 140,000 dues-paying members . Rock House Reservation
The Rock House Reservation is a open space preserve located in West Brookfield, Massachusetts. The property, acquired in 1993 by the land conservation non-profit organization The Trustees of Reservations, is named for a natural rock shelter once used as a winter camp by Native Americans. Its location near two, long Native American footpaths suggests that it may also have been a trail camp and meeting place. The Rock House Reservation is located off Massachusetts Route 9 and offers of hiking trails, an interpretive center, a butterfly garden, and scenic vistas. Boulder strewn Carter Pond occupies the center of the property. The reservation is open to hiking, picnicking, and cross country skiing. Lucy Stone
Lucy Stone (August 13, 1818 – October 18, 1893) was an American orator, abolitionist and suffragist who was a vocal advocate for and organizer promoting rights for women. In 1847, Stone became the first woman from Massachusetts to earn a college degree. She spoke out for women's rights and against slavery. Stone was known for using her birth name after marriage, contrary to the custom of women taking their husband's surname. Stone's organizational activities for the cause of women's rights yielded tangible gains in the difficult political environment of the 19th century. Stone helped initiate the first National Women's Rights Convention in Worcester, Massachusetts and she supported and sustained it annually, along with a number of other local, state and regional activist conventions.
