Lucretia My Reflection
"Lucretia My Reflection" is a song by the English rock band the Sisters of Mercy. Released as the third and final single from their second studio album, '' Floodland'', in June 1988, it reached number 20 on the UK Singles Chart. Overview The song was written by Andrew Eldritch for the Sisters of Mercy bassist, Patricia Morrison, who, he said, "always strikes me as a Lucrezia orgiatype person". Its lyrics concern the fall of an empire, war and the consequent destruction of other aspects of life. Aside from the reference to Lucrezia Borgia, Lucretia was a Noble Roman woman, whose rape by Etruscan King Sextus Tarquinius, and subsequent suicide, triggered the collapse of the early Roman monarchy, leading to the Roman republic. The story of Lucretia was primarily used in Rome as a didactic tale, similar to the story of Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus, to showcase what the archetypal Roman woman should aspire to be. The Sisters Of Mercy
The Sisters of Mercy is an English rock band, formed in 1980 in Leeds. After achieving early underground fame there, the band had their commercial breakthrough in the mid-1980s and sustained it until the early 1990s, when they stopped releasing new recorded output in protest against their record company WEA. Currently, the band are a touring outfit only. The group has released three original studio albums: '' First and Last and Always'' (1985), '' Floodland'' (1987), and '' Vision Thing'' (1990). Each album was recorded by a different line-up; singer-songwriter Andrew Eldritch and the drum machine called Doktor Avalanche are the only points of continuity throughout. Eldritch and Avalanche were also involved in The Sisterhood, a side-project connected with Eldritch's dispute with former members. Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus ( – ) was a Roman patrician, statesman, and military leader of the early Roman Republic who became a legendary figure of Roman virtue—particularly civic virtue—by the time of the late Republic. Cincinnatus was an opponent of the rights of the plebeians (the common citizens) who fell into poverty because of his son Caeso Quinctius's violent opposition to their desire for a written code of equally enforced laws. Despite his relatively old age, he worked his own small farm until an invasion prompted his fellow citizens to call for his leadership. Lucrezia Borgia (; ca-valencia, Lucrècia Borja, links=no ; 18 April 1480 – 24 June 1519) was a Spanish-Italian noblewoman of the House of Borgia who was the daughter of Pope Alexander VI and Vannozza dei Cattanei. ''Floodland'' is the second studio album by English gothic rock band the Sisters of Mercy. It was released on 16 November 1987, through Merciful Release internationally and distributed by WEA, with Elektra Records handling the United States release. After the release of the band's debut studio album, '' First and Last and Always'' (1985), members Craig Adams and Wayne Hussey left to form the Mission, causing the dissolution of the Sisters of Mercy. As a result, band frontman Andrew Eldritch formed a side project known as the Sisterhood, recording new material with them. After the project's first album was received negatively overall, he went back to recording as part of the Sisters of Mercy and hired the Sisterhood member Patricia Morrison for the recording of a new album. It was the first single from the album, reaching number one on the ''Billboard'' Modern Rock Tracks chart for five weeks, starting 15 December 1990. The song was co-written and co-produced by Andrew Eldritch and Jim Steinman. It was covered by Shaaman on their album ''Reason'', and Gregorian for their album '' The Dark Side''. Steinman produced a cover of the song, by Mike Vogel and Erika Christensen, for the soundtrack of the MTV film ''Wuthering Heights''.
