A comedy film is a category of film which emphasizes humor. These films are designed to make the audience laugh through amusement. Films in this style traditionally have a happy ending (black comedy being an exception). Comedy is one of the oldest genres in film and it is derived from the classical comedy in theatre. John Rawlins (director)
John Rawlins (June 9, 1902 – May 20, 1997) was an American film editor and director. He directed 44 films between 1932 and 1958. He was born in Long Beach, California and died in Arcadia, California. According to one obituary, he was "a prime exponent of that style, being a master of swift exposition and fast action. His no-nonsense approach also made him a fine serial director, and when given the chance of a top-budget adventure film he gave his studio one of its biggest hits in Arabian Nights." Sydney Fairbrother (31 July 1872 – 4 January 1941) was a British actress. Born Sydney Tapping on 31 July 1872 in London to actor/playwright Alfred B. Tapping and actress Florence Cowell, she was educated at Blackpool and Bonn. She made her stage debut in Birmingham in 1890 with the famous ''Kendall Company'' and a few years later toured America with them. She came to the screen in 1915 in a film called ''Iron Justice'' and chiefly appeared in comedy roles. She retired in 1938 and died on 4 January 1941 in London, aged 68. Emily Fitzroy (24 May 1860 – 3 March 1954) was an English theatre and film actress who eventually became an American citizen. She was at one time a leading lady in London for Sir Charles Wyndham. Janice Adair
Janice Adair (25 May 1905 – 11 November 1996) was a British film actress of the early sound era. She was married to the film editor Alfred Roome. Biography Janice Adair was born Beatrice Mary Duffy in Morpeth, Northumberland in 1905 to Thomas and Bridget Duffy. She was one of six children: three sons and three daughters. After the family moved to West Hartlepool, Beatrice began her acting career when she joined the local Operatic and Musical Society. In 1925 she played the role of Mina in Miss Hook of Holland and the following year she played Franzi in A Waltz Dream where she was praised for her "magnificent acting". She then went to London with another girl and began hanging around the Islington Film Studios. Eventually the casting director W J O'Bryen found Beatrice a small role. Charles Farrell (6 August 1900 – 27 August 1988) was an Irish stage, film and television actor. Born 6 August 1900 in Dublin, Ireland, Farrell moved to America and appeared in a stock company in Detroit when a child. In 1921 he moved to England and made his first stage appearance at the Coliseum. His first film appearance was in John Bunny and Flora Finch comedies. Unlike his heroic American namesake, he was (later) cast in villainous film roles. This contrasted with his frequent broadcasts of fairy tales on BBC radio's ''Children's Hour''.
