Luciana Genro
Luciana Krebs Genro (Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, January 17, 1971) is a Brazilian politician, state deputy and one of the founders of the Socialism and Freedom Party (PSOL). In 2014, she was the PSOL nominee for President of Brazil. She came in 4th place, receiving more than 1.6 million votes nationally. She is the daughter of Tarso Genro, an important Workers' Party ( PT) politician. Biography Early life and career Luciana began her political career in the student movement in Porto Alegre and was part of the Socialist Convergence, at the time of the current Workers' Party (PT). She was elected in 1994, at the age of 23, for her first term as state deputy, and re-elected in 1998 with twice the previous vote. Mensalão Scandal
The Mensalão scandal ( pt, Escândalo do Mensalão, ) was a major parliamentary vote-buying scandal by Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's administration that threatened to bring down his government in 2005. ''Mensalão'' is a neologism, a variant of the word for "big monthly payment" (''salário mensal'' or ''mensalidade''). The scandal broke on June 6, 2005 when Brazilian deputy Roberto Jefferson ( Brazilian Labour Party) told the ''Folha de S.Paulo'' newspaper that the ruling Workers' Party (PT) had paid a number of deputies 30,000 reais (around US$12,000 at the time) a month to vote for legislation favored by the ruling party. Plínio Soares de Arruda Sampaio (26 July 1930 – 8 July 2014) was a Brazilian intellectual and political activist, who was affiliated with the Partido Socialismo e Liberdade (PSOL). He ran as a candidate for the presidency of the Federative Republic of Brazil in 2010. A graduate of University of São Paulo School of Law in the class of 1954, he was president of the Catholic University Youth and was an active member of Popular Action. The military dictatorship in Brazil ( pt, ditadura militar) was established on 1 April 1964, after a coup d'état by the Brazilian Armed Forces, with support from the United States government, against President João Goulart.
