''Love, Life and Laughter'' is a 1923 British silent film, written and directed by George Pearson. For many years the film was thought lost, and was listed as one of the British Film Institute's " 75 Most Wanted" lost films. On 2 April 2014, Dutch film institute Eye announced it had discovered a copy. George Pearson (filmmaker)
George Pearson OBE, (19 March 1875 – 6 February 1973) was a pioneering English film director, producer and screenwriter, mainly in the silent film era. He was born in London. Biography The only son of George Pearson, a silk tie cutter, George Pearson's first profession after Culham College, near Oxford (not a college of the University of Oxford) was teaching. He excelled in this role, becoming a headmaster by 1902 at the age of 26. His major post was at Staples Rd School Loughton Essex, on which there is a blue plaque. He was originally drawn to film making as an educational aid. In 1913 Pearson entered the film industry, initially as a script writer. Pearson worked for Gaumont and later joined the Colonial Film Unit (later the Commonwealth Film Unit), remaining in employment until the age of 81. Hubert Gordon Hopkirk (20 April 1884 – 1966) was a British actor of the silent era. He was born in Jena, Germany to British parents and began his film career in the late 1910s. Betty Balfour (born Florence Lilian Woods; 27 March 1902 – 4 November 1977) was an English screen actress, popular during the silent era, and known as the "British Mary Pickford" and "Britain's Queen of Happiness". She was best known to audiences for her '' Squibs'' series of films. Life and career Balfour was the most popular actress in Britain in the 1920s, and in 1927 she was named by the ''Daily Mirror'' as the country's favourite world star. Her talent was most evident in the ''Squibs'' comedy series produced by George Pearson, while in his '' Love, Life and Laughter'' (1923), rediscovered in 2014, and ''Reveille'' (1924), she demonstrated a serious side to her character. Her role as a wealthy heiress in '' Somebody's Darling'' (1925) was an attempt to break out of her previous role as Squibs, to avoid typecasting.
