Louth Flood Of 1920
The 1920 Louth flood was a severe flash flooding event in the Lincolnshire market town of Louth, Lincolnshire, Louth which occurred 29 May 1920, resulting in 23 fatalities in 20 minutes. It has been described as one of the most significant flood disasters in Britain and Ireland during the 20th century. Meteorological and hydrological development The last week of May 1920 saw generally hot weather across the UK, with numerous thunderstorms developing particularly in England. The three days before the 29 May had been wet across the Louth area, which left fields waterlogged and the ground saturated. Rainfall In Louth the storm broke at about 2.00 p.m. on Saturday 29 May, and lasted for about 3 hours. A considerable area of the Wolds to the west of Louth saw over 100 mm of rain. 119.1 mm fell on 29 May at South Elkington a kilometre or so north west of the town. It developed where the ancient trackway along the Wolds, known as the Barton Street, crossed the River Lud. The town is east of a gorge carved into the Wolds that forms the Hubbard's Hills. The 1920 Louth by-election was a parliamentary by-election for the British House of Commons constituency of Louth in Lincolnshire. Voting was held on 3 June 1920. The by-election took place five days after the Louth Flood of 29 May 1920 had claimed 23 lives. Vacancy The seat had become vacant on the death on 28 April of the Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) Henry Langton Brackenbury. He had represented the constituency since the 1918 general election, and previously been Louth's MP from January 1910 to December 1910. Electoral history The constituency was created in 1885. The Liberals had won the seat six times and the Unionists three times.
