Kentucky Public Radio, doing business as Louisville Public Media, is a non-profit organization that operates the three National Public Radio member stations in Louisville, Kentucky—news and talk WFPL, classical music, classical WUOL-FM, and adult album alternative WFPK. The current organization began in 1993, when the Louisville Free Public Library, licensee of WFPL and WFPK, along with the University of Louisville, which ran WUOL-FM, collectively transferred the licenses of the three stations to the community-licensed Public Radio Partnership. The organization has a board of directors which consists of three members appointed by the University of Louisville, four members appointed by the Metro Louisville government, 16 at-large members from the Louisville community including the Chairman, and the organization's President. WAMZ
WAMZ (97.5 FM) is a country music-formatted radio station located in Louisville, Kentucky. The station broadcasts with an ERP of 100 kW. The station's studios are located in the central part of Watterson Park and the transmitter site is in Brooks. Station history Experimental W9XEK began on July 22, 1944 at 45.5 MHz (on the original FM band). A second sister FM station was established on April 20, 1947 on the newer FM band when WCJT started at 99.7 FM as the sister station to WHAS 840. The call sign represented the initials of '' The Courier Journal'' and '' Louisville Times'', all of which were owned by the Bingham family. By the following year, W9XEK was taken off the air and WCJT became WHAS-FM. The Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting (KyCIR) is a nonprofit digital newsroom. It is focused on watchdog journalism related to the U.S. state of Kentucky. Launched in 2013, the center is headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky. It is a service of Louisville Public Media, the NPR member organization in Louisville. Kate Howard has been the KyCIR's managing editor since 2018. WHAS (840 AM) is a radio station owned by iHeartMedia, Inc. and licensed to Louisville, Kentucky. Its studios are located in the Louisville enclave of Watterson Park, and the transmitter site is in Long Run, in far east Jefferson County. First licensed in July 1922, it is the oldest radio station in Kentucky. WHAS is a clear channel station, operating around the clock on 840 kHz with 50,000 watts. Its daytime signal can be heard in almost all of central Kentucky, as well as large slices of Ohio and Indiana, providing city-grade coverage as far east as Lexington, as far south as Bowling Green, and as far north as Cincinnati. The Louisville Free Public Library (LFPL) is the public library system in Louisville, Kentucky, and the largest public library system in the U.S. state of Kentucky. History Formation The Louisville Free Public Library was created in 1902 by an act of the Kentucky State Legislature, and in 1904 it merged with the Polytechnic Society. Services began in 1905 when the Polytechnic Society's collection, held in the top floors of the Kenyon Building, was open to the public. Although the Main Library was completed in 1906, patron services did not officially begin until 1908.
