History Inspired by their studies with world-renowned Bach expert Helmut Walcha, Melvin and Margaret Dickinson founded the Louisville Bach Society in 1964. The Louisville Bach Society's inaugural performance was held in 1964 with sixteen vocalists. Throughout the society's forty-seven years of performances, the choir size grew to include between sixty and seventy members. Its season usually ran from early October to early April. Louisville ( , , ) is the largest city in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the 28th most-populous city in the United States. A choir ( ; also known as a chorale or chorus) is a musical ensemble of singers. Choral music, in turn, is the music written specifically for such an ensemble to perform. Choirs may perform music from the classical music repertoire, which spans from the medieval era to the present, or popular music repertoire. Johann Sebastian Bach (28 July 1750) was a German composer and musician of the late Baroque period. He is known for his orchestral music such as the '' Brandenburg Concertos''; instrumental compositions such as the Cello Suites; keyboard works such as the ''Goldberg Variations'' and ''The Well-Tempered Clavier''; organ works such as the '' Schubler Chorales'' and the Toccata and Fugue in D minor; and vocal music such as the ''St Matthew Passion'' and the Mass in B minor.
