Louisiana Highway 85 (LA 85) is a state highway located in Iberia Parish, Louisiana. It runs in an east–west direction from LA 83 in Lydia to LA 182 in Jeanerette. The route connects the town of Jeanerette with the rural area along LA 83, which serves the Port of New Iberia and leads to the salt domes of Weeks Island. It is also one of two highways which connect the town to U.S. Highway 90 (US 90), the principal highway through the Teche region and the future corridor of Interstate 49 (I-49). Route description From the west, LA 85 begins at an intersection with LA 83 between New Iberia and Weeks Island in an area known as Lydia. 1955 Louisiana Highway Renumbering
In 1955, Louisiana passed a law that undertook a comprehensive revision to the state highway classification and numbering system. The new system designated roads by importance to travel patterns and rectified the previous numbering system under new unified designations. History Highway numbers in Louisiana first appeared in 1921, per Act 95 of the 1921 Special Session of the Louisiana Legislature. Routes 1 through 98 were defined that year. These first 98 routes remained consistent throughout the pre-1955 era. The lowest numbered routes seem to have followed major auto trails; for instance, LA 1 was the Jefferson Highway, LA 2 was the Old Spanish Trail, etc. The remainder of the numbering system seemed to work on a lower-number, higher-order principle, with some clustering; for instance, LA 61 and 62 both existed in St. Bernard Parish. Morgan City, Louisiana
Morgan City is a small city in St. Mary and lower St. Martin parishes in the U.S. State of Louisiana. The population was 12,404 at the 2010 census. Known for being “right in the middle of everywhere”, Morgan City is located 68 miles (109 km) southeast of Lafayette, 64 miles (103 km) south of Baton Rouge, and 86 miles (138 km) west of New Orleans Morgan City sits on the banks of the Atchafalaya River. Old Spanish Trail (auto Trail)
The Old Spanish Trail (the OST) was an auto trail that once spanned the United States with almost of roadway from ocean to ocean. It crossed eight states and 67 counties along the southern border of the United States. Work on the auto highway began in 1915 at a meeting held at the Battle House Hotel in Mobile, Alabama; and, by the 1920s, the trail linked St. Augustine, Florida, to San Diego, California, with its center and headquarters in San Antonio, Texas. The work at San Antonio, and indeed nationally, was overseen by an executive committee consisting of prominent San Antonio businessmen which met at the Gunter Hotel weekly. Promoters of the Old Spanish Trail claimed that it followed the route used by "Spanish Conquistadors" 400 years earlier, but there was no continuous trail from Florida to California in Spanish times. U.S. Highway 90 (US 90), one of the major east–west U.S. Highways in the Southern United States, runs through southern Louisiana for , serving Lake Charles, Louisiana, Lake Charles, Lafayette, Louisiana, Lafayette, New Iberia, Louisiana, New Iberia, Morgan City, Louisiana, Morgan City, and New Orleans.
