Louisiana's 19th State Senate district is one of 39 districts in the Louisiana State Senate. It has been represented by Democrat Gary Smith Jr. since 2012. Geography District 19 covers parts of Jefferson, Lafourche, St. Charles, and St. John the Baptist Parishes along Lake Pontchartrain in Greater New Orleans, including some or all of LaPlace, Norco, Hahnville, Boutte, Des Allemands, Destrehan, Luling, St. Rose, Kenner, and Raceland. The district also includes a sizable portion of Lake Pontchartrain itself, hence its unusual shape. The district overlaps with Louisiana's 1st, 2nd, and 6th congressional districts, and with the 54th, 55th, 56th, 57th, and 92nd districts of the Louisiana House of Representatives. It is the 20th-smallest by area and the 25th most populous of the 50 U.S. states. Raceland, Louisiana
Raceland is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) on Bayou Lafourche in Lafourche Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 9,768 in 2020. It is part of the Houma– Bayou Cane–Thibodaux metropolitan statistical area. According to the Louisiana Office of Tourism, Raceland was named for the Race family that once owned a large plantation named "Raceland" on Bayou Lafourche. Geography Raceland is located at (29.722576, -90.605172), on both sides of Bayou Lafourche. It is bordered to the southeast by Mathews. U.S. Route 90 passes through the southeast part of Raceland, leading northeast to New Orleans and west to Morgan City. John Bel Edwards
John Bel Edwards (born September 16, 1966) is an American politician and attorney serving as the 56th governor of Louisiana since 2016. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously served as the Democratic leader of the Louisiana House of Representatives for two terms. Edwards was first elected to the Louisiana House in 2007. He defeated Republican U.S. Senator David Vitter in the second round of the 2015 election for governor. 2019 Louisiana Gubernatorial Election
The 2019 Louisiana gubernatorial election was held to elect the governor of Louisiana. Incumbent Democratic Governor John Bel Edwards won re-election to a second term, defeating Republican businessman Eddie Rispone. Edwards became the first Democratic Governor of Louisiana to win re-election to a second consecutive term in 44 years since Edwin Edwards (no relation) in 1975. The 2020 United States presidential election in Louisiana was held on Tuesday, November 3, 2020, as part of the 2020 United States presidential election in which all 50 states plus the District of Columbia participated. Louisiana's 2011 state elections were held on October 22, 2011, with runoff elections held on November 19. Two-round System
The two-round system (TRS), also known as runoff voting, second ballot, or ballotage, is a voting method used to elect a single candidate, where voters cast a single vote for their preferred candidate. It generally ensures a majoritarian result, not a simple plurality result as under First past the post. Jungle Primary
A nonpartisan blanket primary is a primary election in which all candidates for the same elected office run against each other at once, regardless of the political party. Partisan elections are, on the other hand, segregated by political party. Nonpartisan blanket primaries are slightly different from most other elections systems with two-rounds/runoff, aka "jungle primaries" (such as the (Louisiana primary), in a few ways.
