Louis Sohns
Louis Sohns (April 29, 1827 – May 17, 1901) was a prominent pioneer of Clark County in what was then Washington Territory, as well as a civic leader, Mayor of Vancouver, Washington, and businessman. Early years Louis Sohns was born in Beerfelden, Germany. He attended Heidelberg University. At the age of 21, he took part in the 1848 Revolution in Germany. When the rebellion failed, he was arrested and put in jail. Somehow he escaped, and using funds from his family, fled persecution in Germany to the United States where he was naturalized in 1856. One reference describes these emigrants as ‘The Forty-Eighters who immigrated to the United States after the failed revolution left their mark in a number of ways. The Territory of Washington was an organized incorporated territory of the United States that existed from March 2, 1853, until November 11, 1889, when the territory was admitted to the Union as the State of Washington. It was created from the portion of the Oregon Territory north of the lower Columbia River and north of the 46th parallel east of the Columbia. At its largest extent, it also included the entirety of modern Idaho and parts of Montana and Wyoming, before attaining its final boundaries in 1863. Augustin Magloire Alexandre Blanchet (22 August 1797 – 25 February 1887) was a French Canadian prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as the first bishop of the now-defunct Diocese of Walla Walla and of the Diocese of Nesqually in present-day Washington State. John McNeil Eddings
John McNeil Eddings (1830–1896) was the military storekeeper at Fort Vancouver, and a prominent civic leader of Clark County in what was then the Washington Territory. Early years Born in Ballintry, Antrim County, Ireland (near Belfast), in 1830, Eddings immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1841. They lived in New York initially, then moved to St. Louis, Missouri. John Eddings enlisted on July 17, 1851 in the U.S. Army Infantry, Fourth Regiment, at Fort Gratiot, Michigan. As a first sergeant he came with that regiment to Vancouver Barracks by way of the Isthmus of Panama in 1851. On that journey were also Ulysses S. Grant, Benjamin Bonneville, Henry C.
