Louis Marcus (filmmaker)
Louis Marcus HRHA (born 1936) is an Irish documentarian. Early life Louis Marcus was born to an Irish Jewish family in Cork City in 1936. His brother David Marcus (1924–2009) was a writer. Their grandfathers, Jacob Marcus and Louis Goldberg, arrived in Cobh, County Cork in 1882, from Akmenė (Akmian) fleeing persecution in the Russian Empire. Career Marcus won the Silver Bear for Best Short Film for ''Fleá Ceoil'' at the 1967 Berlin International Film Festival. '' Children at Work'' was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary (Short Subject) at the 46th Academy Awards(1974), while ''Conquest of Light'' was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film at the 48th Academy Awards(1976). Royal Hibernian Academy
The Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA) is an artist-based and artist-oriented institution in Ireland, founded in Dublin in 1823. Like many other Irish institutions, such as the RIA, the academy retained the word "Royal" after most of Ireland became independent as the Irish Free State in December 1922. History The RHA was founded as the result of 30 Irish artists petitioning the government for a charter of incorporation. According to the letters patent of 5 August 1823, The Royal Hibernian Academy of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture was established, which included a National School of Art. The first elected president was the landscape painter, William Ashford. In 1824 architect Francis Johnston was made president. The 46th Academy Awards were presented on Tuesday, April 2, 1974, at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles, California. Mass is an intrinsic property of a body. It was traditionally believed to be related to the quantity of matter in a physical body, until the discovery of the atom and particle physics. Aosdána ( , ; from , 'people of the arts') is an Irish association of artists. It was created in 1981 on the initiative of a group of writers with support from the country's Arts Council. Membership, which is by invitation from current members, is limited to 250 individuals; before 2005 it was limited to 200. Its governing body is called the Toscaireacht. Formation Aosdána was originally set up on the suggestion of writer Anthony Cronin, by ''Taoiseach'' Charles Haughey, well known for his support for the Arts, although Fintan O'Toole has argued that this also served to deflect criticism of Haughey's political actions. The history of the Jews in Ireland extends back several centuries. Although the Jewish community in Ireland has always been small in numbers (not exceeding 5,500 since at least 1891), it is well established and has generally been well-accepted into Irish life. Jews in Ireland have historically enjoyed a relative tolerance that was largely absent elsewhere in Europe. Early history The earliest reference to the Jews in Ireland was in the year 1079. The Annals of Inisfallen record "Five Jews came from overseas with gifts to Toirdelbach , and they were sent back again oversea". No further reference is found until the 1169 Norman invasion of Ireland launched by Strongbow (Richard de Clare, 2nd Earl of Pembroke) in defiance of a prohibition by Henry II of England. Shimmy Marcus
Shimmy Marcus is an Irish filmmaker. Early life Marcus was born and raised in the Dublin suburb of Terenure, the son of Louis Marcus (filmmaker), Louis Marcus (twice Oscar nominated documentary film-maker). He was educated at Stratford College, and studied Business Management and Advertising in Dublin Institute of Technology. After some years of traveling around the world, Marcus returned to Dublin in the early 1990s to work briefly as a recording and live sound engineer before turning to stage lighting and design. He developed stage lighting for several Irish indie bands at the time, including Engine Alley, Lir (band), LiR, Peach, and The Unbelievable Children. Career He wrote his first speculative screenplay ''Headrush (film), Headrush'' over Christmas 1994 and it was optioned shortly after by Ed Guiney of Element Films.
