Louis Fisher
Louis Fisher (March 20, 1913 – November 28, 2001) was the Socialist Labor Party of America candidate for United States President in the 1972 Presidential election and he was "the party's top vote-getting presidential candidate." His vice presidential candidate was Genevieve Gunderson. Fisher also ran for Governor of Illinois twice unsuccessfully; the party had run candidates for governor starting in 1896. He also ran for Senator from Illinois four times: in 1956, 1960, 1968, 1970 and for Secretary of State of Illinois in 1944. The line-item veto, also called the partial veto, is a special form of veto power that authorizes a chief executive to reject particular provisions of a bill enacted by a legislature without vetoing the entire bill. Julius "Jules" Levin (3 February 1922 – 16 May 1988) was the last Socialist Labor Party of America candidate for United States President in the 1976 Presidential election; his running mate was Constance Blomen. The 1972 United States presidential election was the 47th quadrennial presidential election. It was held on Tuesday, November 7, 1972. Incumbent Republican President Richard Nixon defeated Democratic Senator George McGovern of South Dakota. Until the 1984 election, this was the largest margin of victory in the Electoral College in a U.S. presidential election, and as of 2022, it remains the last time a presidential candidate captured more than 60% of the popular vote.
