Louis Cahen D'Anvers
Count Louis Raphaël Cahen d'Anvers (24 May 1837 – 20 December 1922) was a French banker. Born in 1837 as the son of Meyer Joseph Cahen d'Anvers and Clara Bischoffsheim (1810-1876), he was a scion of two wealthy Jewish banking families. He married Louise de Morpurgo, of an also wealthy Sephardi Jewish family from Trieste. Two of their daughters, Alice (1876–1965) and Elisabeth (1874–1944 KZ Auschwitz), were painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in '' Pink and Blue'' in 1881. Alice married Major General Sir Charles Townshend and was the grandmother of Belgian-American journalist Arnaud de Borchgrave. A third daughter, Irène (1872 -1963) was also the subject of a Renoir painting entitled ''Little Irène''. Louis was so dissatisfied with the painting that he hung it in the servants' quarters and delayed payment of only 1500 francs. Irene married Moïse de Camondo in 1891 and divorced in 1902. The history of the Jews in Belgium goes back to the 1st century CE until today. The Jewish community numbered 66,000 on the eve of the Second World War but, after the war and The Holocaust, is now less than half that number. History Early history The first Jews to arrive in the present-day territory of Belgium arrived with the Romans between the years 50 and 60 AD. Auschwitz Concentration Camp
Auschwitz concentration camp ( (); also or ) was a complex of over 40 concentration and extermination camps operated by Nazi Germany in occupied Poland (in a portion annexed into Germany in 1939) during World War II and the Holocaust. It consisted of Auschwitz I, the main camp (''Stammlager'') in Oświęcim; Auschwitz II-Birkenau, a concentration and extermination camp with gas chambers; Auschwitz III-Monowitz, a labor camp for the chemical conglomerate IG Farben; and dozens of subcamps. Béatrice Reinach
Louise Béatrice Reinach (9 July 1894–1945) was a French socialite and a Holocaust victim. Biography Born into the wealthy Camondo family in the 16th arrondissement of Paris, she was the daughter of Count Moïse de Camondo and Irène Cahen d'Anvers, both of whom were from prominent Jewish banking families. One of two children, her older brother Nissim served as a fighter pilot during World War I and was killed in action in 1917. In 1918, Béatrice de Camondo married composer Léon Reinach (1893–1943), the son of Théodore Reinach. They had the following children: # Fanny (born 26 July 1920 in Paris, murdered in 1943 at Auschwitz) # Bertrand (born 1 July 1923 in Paris, murdered in 1943 at Auschwitz) On her father's death in 1935, Béatrice inherited a large fortune.
