Louis Alexis Baudoin
Louis Alexis Baudoin (Saint-Jean-d'Angély, 2 December 1776 — ''Fougueux'', off Trafalgar, 21 October 1805Quintin, pp. 50–51) was a French Navy officer and captain. Career After sailing on merchantmen, Baudouin joined the Navy as a temporary Lieutenant and embarked on ''Tourville'' on 7 June 1793. Promoted to full Lieutenant on 20 March 1794, he served on the frigate ''Thétis'', of which he took command in 1796. In 1798, he was appointed to ''Vénus'' and took part in the Expédition d'Irlande. In 1799, he served on the frigate ''Concorde'' under Jean-François Landolphe, on which he took part in the action of 4 August 1800 and was captured. Returned to France in September 1801, he was appointed on ''Foudroyant''. Promoted to Commander on 27 October 1802, Baudouin was given command of the frigate ''Guerrière''. Saint-Jean-d'Angély (; Saintongeais: ''Sént-Jhan-d'Anjhéli'') is a commune in the Charente-Maritime department in southwestern France. ''Guerrière'' was a 38-gun frigate of the French Navy, designed by Forfait. The British captured her and recommissioned her as HMS ''Guerriere''. She is most famous for her fight against . Her career with the French included a sortie with ''Duguay-Trouin'' in 1803, in which the two vessels were forced to make an escape from a British ship. They were harried by British forces of varying strengths during their journey back to port and only just reached the safety of Corunna, with ''Guerrière'' being engaged by the 74-gun until she reached the entrance to the port. The action of 4 August 1800 was a highly unusual naval engagement that took place off the Brazilian coast during the French Revolutionary Wars. A French frigate force that had been raiding British commerce off West Africa approached and attempted to attack a convoy of valuable East Indiamen (large and heavily armed merchant vessels sailing from Britain to British India and China), two ships sailing for Botany Bay, and a whaler sailing for the South Seas' whale fishery. The small British ship of the line escorted the convoy, which otherwise had to rely on the ships' individual armament to protect them from attack. Due to their large size, the East Indiamen could be mistaken for ships of the line at a distance, and the French commander Commodore Jean-François Landolphe was un-nerved when the convoy formed a line of battle. ''Fougueux'' was a 74-gun French ship of the line built at Lorient from 1784 to 1785 by engineer Segondat.
