Louis-Philippe Gagné
Louis-Philippe Gagné (April 16, 1900- January 13, 1964) was a French Canadian American journalist, snowshoe enthusiast, and politician. He wrote an influential and widely circulated political column in ''Le Messager'' and served as mayor of Lewiston, Maine, from 1947 to 1949. Gagné was born in 1900 in Quebec City to Elphege and Georgianna Gagné. He was a protege of Cardinal Louis-Nazaire Bégin and entered seminary. In 1917, he began working for ''Le Soleil'' newspaper. Five years later, he emigrated to Lewiston, Maine, United States, and became editor of ''Le Messager'', the city's Franco newspaper. He became a citizen of the United States in 1928 and ran for ward clerk that same year. He was elected to the Lewiston School Committee in 1930 and served in that position until 1934. Lewiston (; ; officially the City of Lewiston, Maine) is the second largest city in Maine and the most central city in Androscoggin County. The city lies halfway between Augusta, the state's capital, and Portland, the state's most populous city. The Maine Legislature is the state legislature of the U.S. state of Maine. It is a bicameral body composed of the lower house Maine House of Representatives and the upper house Maine Senate. The Legislature convenes at the State House in Augusta, where it has met since 1832. The House of Representatives consists of 151 members, each chosen from single-member constituencies. Adjustable bindings attach them to appropriate winter footwear. Traditional snowshoes have a hardwood frame filled in with rawhide latticework. Modern snowshoes are made of lightweight metal, plastic, and other synthetic materials. In the past, snowshoes were essential equipment for anyone dependent on travel in deep and frequent snowfall, such as fur trappers. They retain that role in areas where motorized vehicles cannot reach or are inconvenient to use. However, their greatest contemporary use is for recreation.
