Lou Merrill
Louis Dilman Merrill (April 1, 1912 – April 7, 1963) was an American actor, who worked primarily in radio from the 1930s through the 1950s. Early life Lou Merill was born on April 1, 1912, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada., and moved to the United States when he was young. He acted in stock theater and little theater before going to radio. Radio Merrill began working in radio in 1928. He performed in ''Lux Radio Theater'' as a utility supporting player in nearly every broadcast from 1937 to 1939 (notably as Sleepy in ''Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs''), and also served as an assistant director handling the crowd scenes during that time. He continued to work the show sporadically until 1953. Winnipeg () is the capital and largest city of the province of Manitoba in Canada. Captain Nemo (; later identified as an Indian, Prince Dakkar) is a fictional character created by the French novelist Jules Verne (1828–1905). Nemo appears in two of Verne's science-fiction classics, ''Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas'' (1870) and ''The Mysterious Island'' (1875). It was created by Frank Burt (screenwriter), Frank Burt, who also wrote many of the episodes, and lasted only one season of 39 episodes on NBC (Sept. 20, 1953–June 24, 1954). A rogues' gallery (or rogues gallery) is a police collection of mug shots or other images of criminal suspects kept for identification purposes. ''The CBS Radio Workshop'' was an experimental dramatic radio anthology series that aired on CBS from January 27, 1956, until September 22, 1957. Subtitled “radio’s distinguished series to man’s imagination,” it was a revival of the earlier ''Columbia Experimental Laboratory'' (1931), ''Columbia Experimental Dramatic Laboratory'' (1932) and ''Columbia Workshop'' broadcasts by CBS from 1936 to 1943, and used some of the same writers and directors employed on the earlier series. ''On Stage'' is an American radio show also known as ''On Stage with Cathy and Elliott Lewis'' and ''Cathy and Elliott Lewis on Stage''. It was an anthology program that aired on CBS for two seasons from 1953 to 1954. Origin Elliott and Cathy Lewis had wanted a half-hour weekly show over which they had creative control as early as 1946. ''On Stage'' came about as radio was in a time of transition due to the popularity of television. ''Suspense'' is a radio drama series broadcast on CBS Radio from 1940 through 1962. One of the premier drama programs of the Old-time radio, Golden Age of Radio, was subtitled "radio's outstanding theater of thrills" and focused on Suspense (genre), suspense thriller-type scripts, usually featuring leading Hollywood actors of the era. Approximately 945 episodes were broadcast during its long run, and more than 900 still exist. ''Suspense'' went through several major phases, characterized by different hosts, sponsors, and director/producers. ''The Man Called X'' is an espionage radio drama that aired on CBS and NBC from July 10, 1944, to May 20, 1952. The radio series was later adapted for television and was broadcast for one season, 1956–1957. People Herbert Marshall had the lead role of agent Ken Thurston/"Mr. X", an American intelligence agent who took on dangerous cases in a variety of exotic locations. Leon Belasco played Mr. X's comedic sidekick, Pegon Zellschmidt, who always turned up in remote parts of the world because he had a "cousin" there. Zellschmidt annoyed and helped Mr. X. ''Escape'' is an American radio drama. It was radio's leading anthology series of high-adventure radio dramas, airing on CBS from July 7, 1947 to September 25, 1954. Since the program did not have a regular sponsor like '' Suspense'' (a sister program that often used the same actors and scripts), it was subjected to frequent schedule shifts and lower production budgets, although Richfield Oil signed on as a sponsor for five months in 1950. Despite these problems, ''Escape'' enthralled many listeners during its seven-year run.
