Lott Cary Birth Site
Lott Cary Birth Site, also known as the Lott Cary House, is a historic home located near Charles City, Charles City County, Virginia. The modest wooden frame plantation house was built in the late-18th century, and consists of a -story, three bay, original main house, extended by the later addition of one-story wings. Little of the original fabric remains. There is a strong local oral tradition that the property was the birth site of Lott Cary (1780–1828), a slave held by planter John Bowry, who owned the house. After being hired out in Richmond, Virginia, Cary bought his freedom and that of his children. He had been promoted to supervise tobacco workers and also served as a shipping clerk. In the state capital he became a Baptist minister and lay physician, and learned to read and write. Charles City is a census-designated place (CDP) in Charles City County, Virginia, United States. It is the county seat of Charles City County. The population as of the 2020 census was 104. The community is centered on the Charles City County Court House, from which it takes its variant names Charles City Court House and Charles City Courthouse. Charles City County is a county located in the U.S. commonwealth of Virginia. The county is situated southeast of Richmond and west of Jamestown. It is bounded on the south by the James River and on the east by the Chickahominy River. The area that would become Charles City County was first established as "Charles Cittie" by the Virginia Company in 1619. It was one of the first four "boroughs" of Virginia, and was named in honor of Prince Charles, who would later become King Charles I of England. After Virginia became a royal colony, the borough was changed to "Charles City Shire" in 1634, as one of the five original Shires of Virginia. Lott Cary
Lott Cary (also in records as Lott Carey and Lott Gary) (1780 – November 10, 1828) was an African-American Baptist minister and lay physician who was a missionary leader in the founding of the colony of Liberia on the west coast of Africa in the 1820s. He founded the first Baptist church there in 1822, now known as Providence Baptist Church of Monrovia. He served as the colony's acting governor from August 1828 to his death in November of that year. Life Born into slavery in Charles City County, Virginia, Carey purchased his freedom and that of his children at the age of 33 after saving money from being hired out by his master in Richmond. He became a supervisor in a tobacco warehouse, as the city was a major port for the export of that commodity crop.
