James Young (director)
James Young (January 1, 1872 – June 9, 1948) was an American film director, actor, and screenwriter of the silent era. Before films Young had a successful career as a stage actor appearing on Broadway and throughout the country, and was the author of a notable 1905 book on theatrical makeup. Young directed more than 90 films between 1912 and 1928. He also appeared as an actor in 60 films between 1909 and 1917. His first wife was librettist Rida Johnson Young who often composed with Victor Herbert. His second wife was film actress Clara Kimball Young, 18 years his junior, who kept his surname after they divorced. James Young died in New York City on June 9, 1948. Mayme Kelso (February 28, 1867 – June 5, 1946) was an American actress of the silent era. She appeared in more than 70 films between 1911 and 1927. She was born in Columbus, Ohio, and died in South Pasadena, California from a heart attack. She is especially known for her performances in ''Seven Keys to Baldpate'' (1925), ''Male and Female'' (1919), and ''Clarence'' (1922). Broadway Kelso's first Broadway performance was as Mrs. Magrueder in ''About Town'' in 1894. Mabel Van Buren (born Mabel Brown Southard; July 17, 1878 – November 4, 1947) was an American stage and screen actress. Biography As a theatrical performer she played the leading lady in both ''The Virginian'' and ''The Squaw Man'' (1909). Van Buren became prominent in motion pictures at the time of the development of feature-length movies in 1914. She starred in '' The Girl of the Golden West'' (1915) under the direction of Cecil B. Demille. It was Demille who brought Mabel west to Hollywood. Mabel was the first leading lady of the Famous Players-Lasky studio on Vine Street in Hollywood, California. Her final role of note was in ''Neighbor's Wives'' (1933) in which she played ''Mrs. Lee''. She continued acting in movies until the death of her husband, James Gordon. Carl Stockdale also known as Carlton Stockdale (February 19, 1874 – March 15, 1953) was one of the longest-working Hollywood veteran actors, with a career dating from the early 1910s. He also made the difficult transition from silent films to talkies. Stockdale was born in Worthington, Minnesota, graduated from Minneapolis Central High School, and attended the University of North Dakota. Before he began working with films, Stockdale was a property man with a repertory theatrical company headed by his brother. He went on to act on stage in repertory theater and in vaudeville. Stockdale was in Hollywood as early as 1913 with a small role in Gilbert M. Anderson's ''Broncho Billy's Last Deed''. He worked with that film franchise for two years before joining D. W. Griffith's film company. He remained busy into the 1940s. His last film was released in 1943. Channing Pollock (March 4, 1880 – August 17, 1946) was an American playwright, critic and screenwriter, whose works included '' The Evil Thereof'' (1916) and the memoir ''The Footlights, Fore and Aft'' (1911). Pollock is perhaps best remembered in connection with a review of one of his later plays, in which Dorothy Parker famously wrote "'The House Beautiful' is the play lousy." Elliott Dexter (March 29, 1870 – June 21, 1941) was an American film and stage actor. Dexter started his career in vaudeville and did not move to films until he was 45. He retired from acting in 1925. Biography Dexter was born in Galveston, Texas. He married silent film actress Marie Doro in 1915. However, the union was brief and the couple soon divorced, having had no children. Dexter died in Amityville, New York, aged 71.
