Los Nikis
Los Nikis is a Spanish pop-punk group emerged from the 1980s associated to la Movida. They've been nicknamed "The Ramones from Algete" with songs that feature very simple music and humorous lyrics and subject matter. Some of their more famous songs are: ''El Imperio contraataca'' (''The Empire strikes back''), ''Mi chica se ha ido a Katmandú'' (''My girl has gone to Kathmandu''), ''Navidades en Siberia'' (''Christmas in Siberia''), ''Olaf el Vikingo'' (''Olaf the Viking'') and ''Medicina nuclear'' (''Nuclear medicine''). Their cover of ''Born to be alive'' consisted of just repeating ''Me voy a Benidorm'' (''I'm going to Benidorm''). They also covered '' Rhythm of the rain'', originally by The Cascades, as ''No vuelvo a ir a Benidorm'' (''I'm not going to Benidorm again'') with lyrics criticizing mass tourism in the Spanish coastal city. Algete
Algete () is a town and municipality in central Spain. It lies in the comarca de Alcalá in the autonomous community of the Community of Madrid. It had a population of 19,345 in 2008. Algete is northeast of the capital. Sights include the church of Asunción de Nuestra Señora. History There are no records of the first settlements in Algete. There are remains of human settlements in the Iron Age found in the fertile plain of Jarama. Remains of Roman villas and Visigoth settlements have also been found. It is known that it was inhabited in Arabic times due to the existence of ''qanat'' or underground waterways. From this period may come its name, derived from Al-Satt, which means ''the bank'' (by the River Jarama). Ramones
The Ramones were an American punk rock band that formed in the New York City neighborhood of Forest Hills, Queens, in 1974. They are often cited as the first true punk rock group. Despite achieving a limited commercial appeal in the United States during their time together, the band saw more success in England and Brazil, and are today seen as highly influential. All of the band members adopted pseudonyms ending with the surname "Ramone", although none of them were biologically related; they were inspired by Paul McCartney, who would check into hotels as "Paul Ramon". Born To Be Alive
''Born to Be Alive'' is the first studio album by Patrick Hernandez, released internationally in 1978 and in the US in 1979. It features the eponymous disco hit "Born to Be Alive" as well as a less-successful single, "Disco Queen". Background While a member of the French group Gold, Hernandez was signed by producer Jean Vanloo and left to Waterloo, Belgium to begin work on a solo album. In November, 1978, the album was released on the Aariana sub-label Aquarius Records (in France). The first single released from the album was "Born to Be Alive". It found immediate success throughout Europe, and in January 1979, Hernandez received his first gold record from Italy. Just starting her career as a dancer, Madonna toured parts of Europe with Hernandez. In early 1979, the album reached the US market with a release on the A-Tom-Mik label and later Columbia Records. The Cascades (band)
The Cascades was an American vocal group best known for the single " Rhythm of the Rain", recorded in 1962, an international hit the following year. Career In 1960, the Silver Strands were a group of United States Navy personnel serving on the USS ''Jason'' (AR-8) based in San Diego, California. They recruited John Gummoe, who originally acted as manager, then left the Navy to become The Thundernotes. The group's membership consisted of John Claude "John" Gummoe (born August 2, 1938) (lead vocals), Lenny Green (vocal and lead guitar), Dave Wilson (drums and vocal), Dave Stevens (bass), and Art Eastlick (rhythm guitar). Their first and only recording, "Thunder Rhythm" (and "Payday" on the reverse of the 45rpm) was with DelFi Records of Hollywood, owned and managed by Bob Keane. It was a surf-type instrumental.
