Lorene Cary (born 1956) is an American author, educator and social activist. Biography Cary grew up in a working-class neighborhood in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1972, she was invited to the elite St. Paul's boarding school in New Hampshire, on scholarship, entering in St. Paul's second year of co-education as one of the fewer than ten African-American female students. She spent two years at St. Paul's, graduating in 1974. She earned an undergraduate degree and her MA from the University of Pennsylvania in 1978. She was awarded a Thouron Fellowship, enabling her to study at Sussex University in the United Kingdom, where she received an MA in Victorian literature. After finishing college, Cary worked in publishing for several magazines, including ''Time'', ''TV Guide'', and ''Newsweek.'' Lorene Mann (born Lillian Lorene Mann; January 4, 1937 – May 24, 2013) was an American country music singer and songwriter. She is known for her duets with Justin Tubb and Archie Campbell. Biography Mann was born January 4, 1937, in Huntland, Tennessee, as the youngest of ten children. After moving to Nashville, Tennessee, in 1956, Mann wrote "Left to Right", a top 10 hit by Kitty Wells in 1960. She also wrote "Don't Go Near the Indians" by Rex Allen (#4, 1962), "Something Precious" by Skeeter Davis (#23, 1962), and "My Wife's House" by Jerry Wallace (#9, 1974). Between 1965 and 1969, Mann recorded for RCA Victor. She recorded two duet albums, ''Together and Alone'' with Justin Tubb in 1966, and ''Tell It Like It Is'' with Archie Campbell in 1968. Lorene Ramsey, a pioneer in women's sports, is one of the most successful college coaches of all time. In 1968, Ramsey joined the staff of Illinois Central College, a community college in East Peoria, Illinois. There, before the passing of Title IX, she started the women's athletic program. She coached the softball team for 28 years, compiling an overall record of 840-309 and two NJCAA National Softball Championships. She also coached the women's basketball team for 33 seasons amassing a record of 887-197 while winning four NJCAA Women's Basketball Championships. Shields and Yarnell were an American mime team, formed in 1972, consisting of Robert Shields (born March 26, 1951) and Lorene Yarnell (March 21, 1944 – July 29, 2010). Robert Shields Shields was born in Los Angeles and graduated from Grant High School. At the age of 18, while working as a street mime and performing at the Hollywood Wax Museum, he was discovered by Marcel Marceau, who offered him a full scholarship to his school of mime in Paris. His apprenticeship was short-lived, however, as he felt the need to develop his own style and pry mime loose from its artsy pedestal. Shields soon returned to California, working in Union Square, San Francisco. Shields is credited with being the originator of "The Robot" moves early in his career. ''My Baby's Gone'' is an album by American country music duo The Louvin Brothers, released in 1960. The lead-off single "My Baby Came Back" b/w "She Didn't Even Know I Was Gone" did not chart although the follow-up single "My Baby's Gone" b/w "Lorene" reached number 9 on the ''Billboard'' Country Singles chart. Background The majority of the songs were recorded in 1958 and four had been released as singles that year. The duo had previously recorded gospel songs written by Hazel Houser, but "My Baby's Gone" was the only secular song of hers they recorded. It stayed on the ''Billboard'' Country Singles chart for over 20 weeks and peaked at number 9. "I Wish It Had Been a Dream" had also been released as a single although it didn't chart well. The album cover featuring a despondent looking man was designed by the brothers.
