The Lord Mayor's Cup is a Brisbane Racing Club Group 3 Thoroughbred horse race for horses three years old and older, run under Weight for Age conditions over a distance of 1600 metres at Eagle Farm Racecourse, Brisbane, Australia during the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival. Total prizemoney is A$140,000. History The first time the race was run as the Labour Day Cup was on 7 May 1956 as a 10 furlong event on a seven race meeting at Doomben and was held on Labour Day which at the time was the first Monday in May. The race was upgraded to a Listed race in 1979. The race continued to be held on Labour Day until 2003 when it was rescheduled for late April with the name change to Doomben Carnival Cup. In 2005 the race was set to the current name Lord Mayor's Cup and since 2006 the race is on the Doomben Cup racecard. The race has had several changes in the running distance. Eagle Farm Racecourse
Eagle Farm Racecourse is a heritage-listed horse racing venue in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It is located at the northern end of Racecourse Road in the suburb of Ascot, from the Brisbane central business district. The turf track is wide, with a circumference of and a home straight of . Gunsynd
Gunsynd (4 October 1967 – 29 April 1983) was a champion Australian Thoroughbred racehorse who won 29 races and A$280,455 in prize money. In his seven starts over one mile (1,600 metres) he was only once defeated, by half-a-head in the Epsom Handicap. Breeding Foaled in 1967, at The Dip Stud, at Breeza, New South Wales, Gunsynd was by the grey racehorse, Sunset Hue (by the imported sire, Star Kingdom), his dam was a twin foal, Woodie Wonder, that ran third at her only start. Woodie Wonder was by the sire, Newtown Wonder (GB). She was the dam of eight foals, six of which raced for three winners. Doomben Racecourse
Doomben Racecourse is a horse racing venue in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It is located in the suburb of Ascot, 7 kilometres north of the Brisbane central business district. The Doomben course neighbours another thoroughbred venue called the Eagle Farm Racecourse and can be accessed via car, train or bus. Together with Eagle Farm, these courses are considered the two major racecourses in South East Queensland, and can be seen sharing irrigation systems and some of Brisbane Racings feature events. The Doomben Cup is a Brisbane Racing Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race for horses three years old and older, run under Weight for Age conditions over a distance of 2000 metres at Doomben Racecourse, Brisbane, Australia during the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival. Total prize money is A$1,000,000. History The race was first held in 1933 as a principal race won by Pentheus in a time of 2.05.7 over the 10 furlongs. Among the outstanding stayers to win the Doomben Cup in its early years include Bernborough in 1946. The New Zealand bred Rough Habit won the race three times from 1991–1993.
