Charles William Henry Montagu-Scott, 4th Duke of Buccleuch and 6th Duke of Queensberry, KT (24 May 1772 – 20 April 1819), styled Earl of Dalkeith until 1812, was a British landowner, amateur cricketer and Tory politician. Francis Napier, 8th Lord Napier
Francis Scott Napier, 8th Lord Napier (23 February 1758 – 1 August 1823) was a British peer and army officer. Biography Napier was born in Ipswich in 1758, the son of William Napier (later 7th Lord Napier) and his wife, Mary, a daughter of Charles Cathcart, 8th Lord Cathcart. Inheriting his father's title on 2 January 1775, Napier was earlier commissioned into the 31st Foot in 1774 and was promoted to a lieutenant in 1776. After serving with General Burgoyne in Canada, he fought in the American Revolutionary War with the Convention Army under Burgoyne at the time of their defeat and surrender at the Battle of Saratoga in 1777. After release from captivity at Cambridge, Massachusetts, he purchased a captain's commission in the 35th Foot in 1779 and transferred to the 4th Foot in 1784, becoming a major soon afterwards. Henry Francis Hepburne-Scott, 7th Lord Polwarth (1 January 1800 – 16 August 1867) was firstly a Member of the Parliament of the United Kingdom for Roxburghshire, 1826–32, then a Representative Peer for Scotland in the House of Lords at Westminster. He was Lord Lieutenant and Sheriff Principal of Selkirkshire, and a Lord-in-Waiting to Queen Victoria. His father, Hugh Scott of Harden and Mertoun, had entered the House of Lords following his claim, by right of his mother, for the 1690 Scottish peerage of Lord Polwarth being admitted by them in July 1835. Henry assumed the additional surname of Hepburne in consequence of the estates of the Hepburns of Humbie having descended to him, through his great-great-grandmother, Helen Hepburn, Countess of Tarras. Sir Samuel Barber Strang Steel of Philiphaugh, 1st Baronet, Territorial Decoration (1 August 1882 – 14 August 1961) was a landowner and Conservative Party politician in the United Kingdom. He was Member of Parliament (MP) for Ashford from 1918 to 1929. Early life Samuel Strang Steel was the only son of William Steel, who founded Steel Brothers & Co with his older brother James in Burma and his wife Rosetta Barber (married 25 October 1881). Lord Lieutenancies Of Scotland
The lieutenancy areas of Scotland are the areas used for the ceremonial lord-lieutenants, the monarch's representatives, in Scotland. The lord-lieutenants' titles chosen by the monarch and his legal advisers are mainly based on placenames of the traditional counties of Scotland. In 1794 permanent lieutenancies were established by Royal Warrant. By the Militia Act 1797 (37 Geo.3, C.103), the lieutenants appointed "for the Counties, Stewartries, Cities, and Places" were given powers to raise and command County Militia Units. While in their lieutenancies, lord lieutenants are among the few individuals in Scotland officially permitted to fly a banner of the Royal Arms of Scotland, the "Lion Rampant" as it is more commonly known. Lieutenancy areas are different from the current local government council areas and their committee areas.
