Lord-Lieutenant
A lord-lieutenant ( ) is the British monarch's personal representative in each lieutenancy area of the United Kingdom. Historically, each lieutenant was responsible for organising the county's militia. In 1871, the lieutenant's responsibility over the local militia was removed. However, it was not until 1921 that they formally lost the right to call upon able-bodied men to fight when needed. Lord-lieutenant is now an honorary titular position usually awarded to a retired notable person in the county. West Midlands (county)
West Midlands is a metropolitan county in the West Midlands Region, England, with a 2021 population of 2,919,600, making it the second most populous county in England after Greater London. It was created in 1974 by the Local Government Act 1972, from parts of Staffordshire, Worcestershire and Warwickshire. The county is a NUTS 2 region within the wider NUTS 1 region of the same name. It embraces seven metropolitan boroughs: the cities of Birmingham, Coventry and Wolverhampton, and the boroughs of Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull and Walsall. The county is overseen by the West Midlands Combined Authority, which covers all seven boroughs and other non-constituent councils, on economy, transport and housing. Charles Ian Finch-Knightley, 11th Earl Of Aylesford
Charles Ian Finch-Knightley, 11th Earl of Aylesford, (2 November 1918 – 19 February 2008), styled Lord Guernsey between 1940 and 1958, was a British peer. Biography Lord Aylesford was the elder son of Earl of Aylesford, Charles Finch-Knightley, 10th Earl of Aylesford, by Aileen Jane, daughter of William McCormac Boyle. He was educated at Oundle School. He served in the Second World War where he was wounded. After the war he was appointed a Justice of the Peace for Warwickshire in 1948 and a Deputy Lieutenant of the county in 1954. He succeeded his father in the earldom in 1958. In 1974 he was appointed to the new post of Lord-Lieutenant of the West Midlands, a position he held until 1993. Robert Richard Taylor
Sir Robert Richard Taylor, KCVO, OBE (1932–2008) was a British public administrator, airport manager and Royal Air Force officer. Taylor was born on 14 June 1932 in Birmingham. After attending Yardley Grammar School, he joined the RAF in 1952 as a pilot, specialising in reconnaissance. He served in Egypt that year, and then in Kenya two years later (during the Mau Mau Uprising). In 1955, he became an instructor. And then spent spells in Canberra and Laarbruch until 1964, when he was posted in Singapore and promoted to Flight Lieutenant. After two years gathering intelligence in Borneo, he returned to Britain and then, in 1969, took command of No 231 Operational Conversion Unit in Canberra. Paul Chandrasekharan Sabapathy is a retired British accountant and business manager, of Indian origin, and was Lord Lieutenant of the West Midlands of England, from 2007 until his resignation in September 2015. He was the first non-white Lord Lieutenant in the United Kingdom. He was born in Chennai, India. and was educated at The Lawrence School, Lovedale, graduating in 1957 and Madras Christian College. He migrated to the United Kingdom in 1964, obtained a master's degree from Aston University and acquired British citizenship in 1984. He is a Chartered Management Accountant and Chartered Global Management Accountant, and worked for IMI plc, and as assistant managing director of IMI Titanium before retiring in 1996. He was chief executive of North Birmingham Community NHS Trust until 2000, and a pro chancellor of Birmingham City University. John Crabtree (businessman)
Sir John Rawcliffe Airey Crabtree, (born 5 August 1949) is an English lawyer and businessman, a former High Sheriff of the West Midlands and current Lord Lieutenant of the West Midlands. He is chair of the organising committee of the 2022 Commonwealth Games and holds or has held a number of business and charity directorships and chairs. Early life Crabtree was born on 5 August 1949 to Norman Lloyd and Joyce Mary Crabtree, and was educated at The Downs School, Colwall, and Radley College. He graduated in law from the University of Birmingham in 1972. Career Crabtree joined the Birmingham solicitors Wragge & Co in 1973, retiring as a senior partner in 2003.
