Charles Loraine Smith
Charles Loraine Smith or Charles Loraine (1 April 1751 – 24 August 1835) was a sportsman, artist and politician. He inherited his family seat in Enderby, Leicestershire while still a boy. He was a keen horseman and his paintings of animals are well regarded. He painted both parodies and more serious subjects. He served in the British parliament, was mentioned in a divorce case, met the pope and rose to be a High Sheriff of Leicestershire. Life Charles Loraine was born in 1751. His father was Sir Charles Loraine, the 3rd baronet of Kirk Harle, and his family's seat became Enderby Hall near Leicester when he gained an inheritance from his great uncle Richard Smith of Enderby. Violet Loraine (26 July 1886 – 18 July 1956) was an English musical theatre actress and singer. Early life She was born Violet Mary Tipton in Kentish Town, London, in 1886 and went on the stage as a chorus girl at the age of sixteen. Musical revue Her rise to fame came in April 1916 at the Alhambra Theatre in the musical/revue ''The Bing Boys Are Here''. She was given the leading female part, Emma, opposite George Robey playing Lucius Bing. It became one of the most popular musicals of the World War I era. Robert Bilcliffe Loraine (14 January 1876 – 23 December 1935) was a successful London and Broadway British stage actor, actor-manager, and soldier who later enjoyed a side career as a pioneer aviator. Born in New Brighton, his father was Henry Loraine and mother Edith Kingsley (born Mary Ellen Bayliss). Robert made his first stage appearance in the English provinces in 1889, prior to serving in the Second Boer War. He introduced the George Bernard Shaw play ''Man and Superman'' to Broadway in 1905. Sir Percy Lyham Loraine, 12th Baronet, (5 November 1880 – 23 May 1961) was a British diplomat. He was British High Commissioner to Egypt from 1929 to 1933, British Ambassador to Turkey from 1933 to 1939 and British Ambassador to Italy from 1939 to 1940. In later life he was involved in breeding thoroughbreds for horse racing and won the 2000 Guineas Stakes in 1954 with Darius. He was the last of the Loraine baronets, having no sons to succeed him. Sir Lambton Loraine, 11th Baronet (17 November 1838 - 13 May 1917) was a British naval officer, involved in several incidents of gunboat diplomacy. He is best remembered for his involvement in the "Virginius Affair" of 1873. On 11 July 1852 he succeeded as 11th Baronet Loraine of Kirke Harle, Northumberland. In the same year he entered the Royal Navy, originally as a Naval Cadet, a Captain noting at the time "Sir Lambton Loraine Bart. Has very good talents, and promises to make a good draughtsman and surveyor." Sir Lambton joined at Valparaiso in early 1853, at the age of 14 years, and was a Midshipman aboard the ship until 1857 at the end of her second commission based in the Pacific. John Alexander Loraine FRSE FRCPE FIB (14 May 1924 – 14 November 1988) was a Scottish physician and endocrinologist. He wrote widely on human sexuality. Life Loraine was born in Edinburgh on 14 May 1924, the son of Ruth (''née'' Jack) and Lachlan Dempster Loraine. He was educated at George Watson's College then studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, graduating with an MB ChB. He did further postgraduate studies, specialising in sexuality and endocrinology and gained both a PhD and DSc. For the degree of DSc he submitted his previously published work, ''The clinical application of hormone assay''. In 1947 he joined the staff of the Clinical Endocrinology Research Unit. Eustace Broke Loraine (3 September 1879 – 5 July 1912) was a pioneer British aviator and the first Royal Flying Corps officer to be killed in an aircraft crash. Eustace Loraine was the first child of Rear-Admiral Sir Lambton Loraine, 11th Baronet, Sir Lambton Loraine, Loraine Baronets, 11th Baronet and his wife Frederica Mary Horatia (née Broke). Vice-Admiral Sir Henry Loraine Baker, 2nd Baronet CB (3 January 1787 – 2 November 1859) was an officer of the British Royal Navy who served during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars against France and her allies, and also in the War of 1812 against the United States.
