Elias Loomis
Elias Loomis (August 7, 1811 – August 15, 1889) was an American mathematician. He served as a professor of mathematics and natural philosophy at Case Western Reserve University, Western Reserve College (now Case Western Reserve University), the New York University, University of the City of New York and Yale University. During his tenure at Western Reserve College in 1838, he established the Loomis Observatory, currently the second oldest observatory in the United States. Life and work Loomis was born in Willington, Connecticut in 1811. He graduated at Yale College in 1830, was a tutor there for three years (1833–36), and then spent the next year in scientific investigation in Paris. Henry Loomis
Henry Loomis (April 19, 1919 – November 2, 2008) was an American physicist and broadcasting executive. He was director of Voice of America from 1958 to 1965, and president of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting from 1972 to 1978. Early years Loomis was born on April 19, 1919, in Tuxedo Park, New York. His father, Alfred Lee Loomis built a fortune financing public utilities and sold out just before the Wall Street crash of 1929. Alfred Loomis set up a physics laboratory in an old mansion where Henry worked with his father as a teenager on brain-wave research, including participating as a volunteer in his father's experiments. The two later took part in pioneering research on radar. Loomis attended Harvard University and left in 1940 during his senior year to enlist in the United States Navy. Harvey Worthington Loomis (February 5, 1865, Brooklyn, New York – December 25, 1930, Boston, Massachusetts) was an American composer. He is remembered today for his associations with the Indianist movement and the Wa-Wan Press. Biography Loomis was born in Brooklyn, New York, on February 5, 1865. He studied piano with Madeline Schiller. In his youth he won a scholarship of three years' study at the National Conservatory, where he studied with Antonín Dvořák, and quickly became a favored pupil of the Bohemian composer. He gained his greatest fame from the collection ''Lyrics of the Red Man'', settings of American Indian songs rescored for piano. Hamilton Michael Loomis (born November 1, 1975) is an American electric blues guitarist, singer, songwriter, and record producer. One of his eight albums released to date, ''Ain't Just Temporary'', peaked at number 7 in the ''Billboard'' Top Blues Albums Chart in September 2007. Gustavus A. Loomis (September 23, 1789 – March 5, 1872) was a United States Army officer who served during the War of 1812, Seminole Wars, the Mexican–American War and the American Civil War. He was one of the oldest soldiers to serve in the civil war. Biography Loomis was born in Thetford, Vermont, and graduated from West Point in 1811. He entered the army as a second lieutenant of artillery. After garrison duty in the harbor of New York in 1812–13, he was ordered to the Niagara frontier in 1813 for service in the War of 1812. He assisted in the capture of Fort George (May 27, 1813) and was made prisoner at Fort Niagara on December 19, 1813. He was exchanged and transferred to the Artillery Corps on May 12, 1814. Major General Sir Frederick Oscar Warren Loomis (February 1, 1870 – February 15, 1937) was a Canadian soldier who fought in the First World War. Military career He enlisted as a private in the Canadian Militia in 1886 with the 53rd Sherbrooke Battalion of Infantry and was made a Provisional Lieutenant in 1897. He was commissioned a year later and transferred to 5th Regiment, Royal Highlanders of Canada in Montreal in 1903 and was later promoted to Major in 1905. Frederic Brewster Loomis (November 22, 1873 – July 28, 1937) was an American paleontologist. Educated at Amherst College and the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, he spent his entire professional career at Amherst. His specialty was vertebrate paleontology. Many fossils he uncovered during his extensive field work are still exhibited at Amherst's Beneski Museum of Natural History. Frank Fowler Loomis (April 2, 1854 – September 19, 1936) was a nineteenth-century American businessman, blacksmith, fireman, engineer and electrician. He was a key manager and director in improving and developing the fire and police departments for the city of Akron, Ohio. Loomis was known for innovating new state of the art electrical-mechanical devices. He developed new style police and fire alarm systems for Akron. He designed and developed the world's first motorized police patrol wagon ("paddy wagon"). This vehicle was an exhibit in the 1915 Panama–Pacific International Exposition. Frank Farmer Loomis Jr. (August 22, 1896 – April 4, 1971) was an American Athletics (sport), athlete, winner of 400 m hurdles at the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp. His brother, Jo Gilbert Loomis, was a substitute sprinter at the same Olympics. Loomis went to school in Evanston until 1914. Upon meeting his future Oregon High School teammate Sherman Landers, he transferred to Oregon, Illinois, to continue training with him. Together, they began a rise that would take them to the 1920 Olympic Games.
