Longtown, Cumbria
Longtown is a market town in Cumbria, England, just south of the Scottish Border. It has a sheep market which was at the centre of the 2001 United Kingdom foot-and-mouth crisis. Just south-west of Longtown is Arthuret Church, dedicated to St Michael and All Angels. Location It is in the parish of Arthuret and on the River Esk. Longtown is to the north of Carlisle and to the east of Dumfries. History Historically in Cumberland, nearby was the Battle of Arfderydd in 573. The Battle of Solway Moss was fought nearby in 1542. 2001 UK Foot and mouth crisis Longtown is the location of the largest sheep markets in England. Longtown, Herefordshire
Longtown is a linear village and parish in Herefordshire, England. The parish includes the village of Clodock and had a population in mid-2010 of 543, increasing to 620 at the 2011 Census. Location Longtown is located north east of Abergavenny and south west of Hereford on the eastern edge of the Black Mountains, Wales, part of the Brecon Beacons National Park. The extensive Hatterall Ridge lies about a mile to the west of the village, and the Black Hill (Herefordshire) two miles to the north. There are car parks at the feet of these mountains, a large one below Black Darren, a notable local landmark comprising a large landslip to the west of the town. There is a smaller car park below the Black Hill, and both are mainly used by walkers to access the hills. Longtown, Missouri
Longtown is a village in Union Township in Perry County, Missouri, United States. The population was 90 at the 2020 census. History Some of the earliest Europeans to put down roots in the area were English and Scotch-Irish Presbyterian settlers from Rowan, Iredell, Cabarrus, and Mecklenburg counties in North Carolina who settled to the south in Brazeau in 1817. Soon after, in 1821, they were followed by English and Scotch-Irish Methodists also hailing from North Carolina, settling in the present area of Longtown. Among the earliest families were the Abernathys, Farrars, and Rutledgers. These settlers were part of a large exodus from the Piedmont region of North Carolina following the War of 1812. In 1826 these settlers built their first log meeting house which was replaced with York Chapel Methodist church in 1836.
