Longton Rugby Club
Longton Rugby Club is an English rugby union team based in Longton, Staffordshire. The club runs two (sometimes 3) senior sides, a social side, and a full set of junior teams. The first XV currently plays in Counties 1 Midlands West (North), a seventh tier league in the English rugby union system. History Formed as Old Longtonians by members of Longton High School in 1935, the club played its first games at Cocknage Road in Dresden just outside of Longton. The club revived after World War II with games first taking place at Longton High School and Meir Aerodrome, before finding a more permanent home at Roughcote Lane by 1975. By 1994 the club had changed its name to Longton Rugby Club and in 2008 moved to larger facilities at Trentham Fields in Trentham Lakes, Stoke-on-Trent. The 1990s and early 2000s were a period of remarkable success for Longton as it became the top club side in Staffordshire, winning four league titles and seven county cups between 1992 and 2010. The Staffordshire Rugby Union is the governing body for the sport of rugby union in the county of Staffordshire in England. The union is the constituent body of the Rugby Football Union (RFU) for Staffordshire, and administers and organises rugby union clubs and competitions in the county. Meir Aerodrome
Meir is a suburb in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire situated between Lightwood and Longton. Meir Park estate extends from Meir uphill to the Meir Heath and Rough Close village hall, located in Meir Heath. Meir Aerodrome Meir Aerodrome closed in the early 1970s and the site has now become the Meir Park housing estate. The earlier parts have mainly aviation-associated street names. The last official flight was on 16 August 1973 when Fred Holdcroft flew a Piper Tri-Pacer carrying a ''Sentinel'' journalist to Manchester. The last unofficial flight "a year or two" later by Eric Clutton was in a home-made folding machine called FRED (Flying Runabout Experimental Design) which the pilot towed home behind his car. Midlands Premier
Regional 1 Midlands (until 2022–23 known as Midlands Premier and up until 2016–17 known as National League 3 Midlands) is a level five semi-professional league in the English rugby union system. It is one of six leagues at this level. When this division began in 1987 it was known as Midlands Division 1. The format of the league was changed at the beginning of the 2009–10 season following a reorganisation by the Rugby Football Union (RFU), and the name change from National League 3 to Premier was introduced for the 2017–18 season by the RFU in order to lessen confusion for what is a series of regional leagues. Staffordshire Senior Cup (rugby Union)
The Staffordshire Senior Cup is an annual rugby union knock-out club competition organised by the Staffordshire Rugby Union. It was first introduced during the 1976–77 season, with the inaugural winners being Walsall. It is the most important rugby union cup competition in Staffordshire, ahead of the Staffordshire Intermediate Cup and Staffordshire Owen Cup. The Senior Cup is open to club sides based in Staffordshire and parts of the West Midlands playing in tier 5 (Midlands Premier), tier 6 (Midlands 1 West) and tier 7 (Midlands 2 West (North)) of the English rugby union system. Midlands 2 West (North)
Midlands 2 West (North) is a level 7 English Rugby Union league and level 2 of the Midlands League, made up of clubs from the northern part of the West Midlands region including Shropshire, Staffordshire, parts of Birmingham and the West Midlands and occasionally Cheshire, with home and away matches played throughout the season. When this division began in 1992 it was known as Midlands West 1, until it was split into two regional divisions called Midlands 3 West (North) and Midlands 3 West (South) ahead of the 2000–01 season. Further restructuring of the Midlands leagues ahead of the 2009–10 season, lead to the current name of Midlands 2 West (North). Staffordshire/Warwickshire 1 was a tier 9 English Rugby Union league with teams from Staffordshire and Warwickshire taking part. Promoted teams moved up to Midlands West 2 and relegated teams dropped to either Staffordshire 1 or Warwickshire 1. The division was cancelled at the end of the 1999–00 campaign due to nationwide league restructuring by the RFU, with the majority of teams transferred into the newly introduced Midlands 4 West (North) or Midlands 4 West (South). Longton is one of the six towns which Federation of Stoke-on-Trent, amalgamated to form the county borough of Stoke-on-Trent in 1910, along with Hanley, Staffordshire, Hanley, Tunstall, Staffordshire, Tunstall, Fenton, Staffordshire, Fenton, Burslem and Stoke-upon-Trent.
