Longhill High School
Longhill High School is a co-educational secondary school for 11 to 16 year-olds, which is located in Rottingdean, Brighton and Hove, East Sussex. History The school was officially opened in 1964, although took its first intake in 1963. The school originally had six houses named after castles in Sussex: Arundel, Bramber, Chichester, Hastings, Lewes and Pevensey. On 16 September 2010, officially it opened its new block, named "Vaughan Block" after one of the longest-serving teachers, after a campaign on the social networking site Facebook. On the hottest day thus far in 2016, several dozen male pupils were excluded from lessons due to wearing school PE shorts instead of trousers. The head teacher said, “Students have access to water in order to keep themselves hydrated" and stated that only around 2 per cent of pupils were involved. Tham Luang Cave Rescue
In June and July 2018, a junior association football team and their assistant coach were rescued from the Tham Luang Nang Non cave in Chiang Rai Province in northern Thailand. Twelve members of the team, aged 11 to 16, and their 25-year-old assistant coach entered the cave on 23 June after a football practice session. Shortly thereafter, heavy rainfall partially flooded the cave system, blocking their way out, and trapping them deep within. Efforts to locate the group were hampered by rising water levels and strong currents; and no contact was made for more than a week. John Volanthen
John Paul Volanthen, (born June 1971) is a British cave diver who undertakes cave rescues through the Cave Rescue Organisation, South and Mid Wales Cave Rescue, and the British Caving Association. In 2018, he played a leading role in the Tham Luang cave rescue. He cave-dives as a hobby and conducts rescues as a volunteer. The Combined Cadet Force (CCF) is a youth organisation in the United Kingdom, sponsored by the Ministry of Defence (MOD), which operates in schools, and normally includes Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force sections. Its aim is to "provide a disciplined organisation in a school so that pupils may develop powers of leadership by means of training to promote the qualities of responsibility, self reliance, resourcefulness, endurance and perseverance". The Young, Gifted & Talented Programme (YG&T) was a United Kingdom government scheme that aimed to enhance the educational development of students between the ages of 4 and 19. The scheme was established in 2002, and scrapped in 2010 in favour of reallocating funds to help disadvantaged students get into University. Learning Through Landscapes
Learning through Landscapes (LtL) is a UK charity which promotes children's outdoor learning and play through improved use of school playgrounds. Started in 1990 as the output of a research project, the charity soon grew in response to the demand from schools and funders. LtL was a founding partner of the Scottish 'Grounds for Learning Project' funded by Scottish Natural Heritage. Scottish Natural Heritage has remained a main partner of LtL in Scotland for 25 years.
