Longford Football Club
The Longford Football Club is an Australian rules football club based in Longford, Tasmania which currently compete in the modern Northern Tasmanian Football Association. From 1926 until 1986 they had played in the original Northern Tasmanian Football Association. Formed in 1878, Longford are nicknamed the Tigers and wear black and gold as their club colours. History As a founding club of the South Esk FA in 1890 the club won the first 10 premierships (i.e. 1890 through to 1899). Further premiership followed in 1901, 1904 and 1906. From 1926 until 1986 they had played in the original Northern Tasmanian Football Association. Longford has their strongest decade in the 1950s when they claimed three NTFA premierships, including their breakthrough triumph in 1955. They had previously never won the competition but had been runners-up in 1931, 1940 and 1953. Northern Tasmanian Football Association (formed 1996)
The Northern Tasmanian Football Association is an Australian rules football competition in northern Tasmania. This league is not related to the older version of the NTFA, which merged in 1987 with the NWFU to form the Northern Tasmanian Football League The North West Football League is an Australian rules football competition in North West Tasmania. The league was previously known as the "Northern Tasmanian Football League" from its inception in 1987 until the end of the 2014 season. History .... Lloyd Bennett
Reginald George Whitton "Lloyd" Bennett (8 April 1916 – 16 April 1995) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Bennett was nicknamed Lloyd after British Prime Minister David Lloyd George and won a Tasman Shields Trophy with Longford in 1940. Bob Cheek
Robert Reginald Cheek (born 13 May 1944 in Launceston, Tasmania) was leader of the Opposition Tasmanian Liberal Party from 20 August 2001 until he lost his seat in the July 2002 election. It was the first time that a major party leader was unsuccessful in a Tasmanian election since 1903. Cheek was first elected to Tasmanian parliament at the 1996 election in the Denison electorate. Prior to entering politics he managed a number of business interests and worked as a journalist for ''The Mercury'' as well as editing ''The Sunday Tasmanian''. Cheek first challenged for Liberal leadership in 1999 running against Sue Napier, he failed to win support and lost 9–2. Fred Davies (footballer Born 1921)
Frederick James "Mulga" Davies (14 August 1921 – 13 August 1961) was an Australian rules footballer who played in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family The son of William Phillip Davies (1884–1983), and Marian Davies (1885–1963), née Thompson, Frederick James Davies was born at Seaford, Victoria on 14 August 1921. He married Joan Mason in 1948, and was the father of the famous Tasmanian dual Olympic basketballer Ian Davies (1956–2013). Football Davies played as both a follower and key position forward. Carlton Cleared to Carlton from Seaford Football Club in April 1941, he made his senior debut for Carlton on 2 August 1941, in the Round 14 match against Hawthorn; and, having enlisted in the Second AIF, he did not play again until he returned from overseas service in 1946. Michael Roach (footballer)
Michael Terrence Roach (born 9 October 1958) is a former Australian rules football player who represented Richmond in the Victorian Football League (VFL) from 1977 to 1989. Remembered for his long, accurate kicking for goal and strong marking, for a brief period Roach was the best forward in Australian football. The second of four key forwards recruited by Richmond from Tasmania (the others being Royce Hart, Matthew Richardson and Jack Riewoldt), Roach was an enormously popular player whose career did not quite live up to expectation because of injury and constant shuffling of his position by the club. Stephen Theodore
Stephen Ross Theodore (born 18 December 1950) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with St Kilda in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1970s. Theodore kicked 22 goals in 1970 and was a half forward flanker in St Kilda's losing 1971 VFL Grand Final team. He played a total of ten finals games and kicked nine goals in finals football. Paul Vinar
Pavel "Paul" Vinar (24 March 1940 – 20 May 2009) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Geelong in the VFL during the 1960s. Family Vinar was born in Czechoslovakia, and moved to Geelong in Australia with his mother and four brothers after his father was killed in World War II. Despite being Czech, his nickname was Swede. Football He was renowned for his long kicking ability. A highly regarded defender and occasional ruckman, he was also a nationally recognised long kicking champion considered to have the longest and most accurate kick of his era. Barry Lawrence
Barry K. Lawrence (born 13 February 1946) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for St Kilda in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and for Longford in the Northern Tasmanian Football Association (NTFA). Barry played as a forward for Longford in Tasmania and signed to play with Hawthorn in 1967 but he decided to stay in Tasmania for two more years. Terence Robert Cashion (7 April 1921 – 8 October 2011) was an award-winning Australian rules footballer from Tasmania who played numerous representative matches for the state and also played for South Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Leo Wescott
Henry David 'Leo' Wescott (8 July 1900 – 25 February 1970) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Collingwood in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Wescott was a back pocket specialist and started his career at Collingwood in 1922. He played in the Collingwood premiership sides of 1927 and 1929. In 1930 he moved to Tasmania where he played for Longford in the Northern Tasmanian Football Association, winning the Tasman Shields Trophy for the competition's Best and Fairest player. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). During general play, players may position themselves anywhere on the field and use any part of their bodies to move the ball. The primary methods are kicking, handballing and running with the ball. North Hobart Football Club
The North Hobart Football Club, nicknamed ''The Demons'', is an Australian rules football club which plays in the Tasmanian State League. The club returned to the state league in 2018 after its position was effectively filled by a new club, the Hobart City Football Club after the 2013 season. The club (i.e. North Hobart) was part of the Tasmanian Football League from the early 1900s through to 2001, where the club joined Southern Football League. In 2009, the club was invited into the second reincarnation of the statewide league where it remained until 2013.
