Long Plain First Nation
The Long Plain First Nation ( oj, Gaa-ginooshkodeyaag) is an Ojibway and Dakota First Nations band government whose reserve is located in the Central Plains Region of Manitoba, Canada. Its reserve lands include the Long Plain Reserve #6, the Keeshkeemaquah Reserve near Portage La Prairie, and the Madison Indian Reserve #1—the first urban reserve in Winnipeg. It is located to the southwest of Portage la Prairie along the Assiniboine River. It lies between the Rural Municipality of Portage la Prairie and the Rural Municipality of South Norfolk, and also borders another band's reserve, that of the Dakota Plains First Nation. The current chief of the Long Plain First Nation is Kyra Wilson; who is the second female Chief in Long Plain history. Ojibway
The Ojibwe, Ojibwa, Chippewa, or Saulteaux are an Anishinaabe people in what is currently southern Canada, the northern Midwestern United States, and Northern Plains. According to the U.S. census, in the United States Ojibwe people are one of the largest tribal populations among Native American peoples. In Canada, they are the second-largest First Nations population, surpassed only by the Cree. They are one of the most numerous Indigenous Peoples north of the Rio Grande. The Ojibwe population is approximately 320,000 people, with 170,742 living in the United States , and approximately 160,000 living in Canada. Dakota Plains First Nation
Dakota Plains First Nation, Dakota Plains Wahpeton Oyate, or Wakhpetunwin Otinta (Waȟpéthuŋwaŋ Otina Dakhóta Oyáte, "Leaf dwellers") is a Wahpeton band Dakota First Nations entity southwest of Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. It borders the somewhat larger Long Plain First Nation, as well as the Rural Municipality of Portage la Prairie and the Municipality of Norfolk Treherne. Dakota Plains First Nation has never signed a treaty with Canada. When the Canadian government was negotiating the Numbered Treaties with Ojibway/Salteaux first nations in the region, Canada excluded the Dakotas, stating that they were refugees from the United States (descedants of Chief Sitting Bull) and thus had no Aboriginal title claim to lands that were taken over by Canada. Native Communications Inc. (NCI) is a public radio network in the Canadian province of Manitoba. The network provides programming by and for Canadian First Nations was founded by Donald A. McIvor of Wabowden, Manitoba. The network mainly plays country music in order to appeal to a more general audience, while still serving the First Nations with its other programming. NCI-FM broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, on more than 50 FM radio transmitters located throughout Manitoba, reaching over 70 communities. Such lands allow for aboriginal commercial ventures which enjoy the tax exemptions offered to traditional reserves.
