The Long, Hot Summer
''The Long, Hot Summer'' is a 1958 American drama film directed by Martin Ritt. The screenplay was written by Irving Ravetch and Harriet Frank Jr., based in part on three works by William Faulkner: the 1931 novella "Spotted Horses", the 1939 short story "Barn Burning" and the 1940 novel ''The Hamlet.'' The title is taken from ''The Hamlet'', as Book Three is called "The Long Summer". Some characters, as well as tone, were inspired by Tennessee Williams' 1955 play, ''Cat on a Hot Tin Roof'', a film adaptation of which – also starring Paul Newman – was released five months later. The plot follows the conflicts of the Varner family after ambitious drifter Ben Quick (Newman) arrives in their small Mississippi town. Will Varner (Orson Welles), the patriarch, has doubts about his son, Jody (Anthony Franciosa) and sees Ben as a better choice to inherit his position. Will tries to push Ben and his daughter Clara (Joanne Woodward) into marriage. Filmed in Clinton, Louisiana, the c ...

Long Hot Summer (Girls Aloud Song)
"Long Hot Summer" is a song by English-Irish all-female pop group Girls Aloud, taken as the first single from their third studio album ''Chemistry'' (2005). The song was written by Miranda Cooper, Brian Higgins and his production team Xenomania, and produced by Higgins and Xenomania. "Long Hot Summer" was written for inclusion in the Disney film '' Herbie: Fully Loaded'' (2005), but plans fell through. Higgins later described the track as "a disaster record." Released in August 2005, it became Girls Aloud's first single to miss the top five on the UK Singles Chart, peaking at number seven. The music video drew inspiration from the possibility of inclusion on the ''Herbie'' soundtrack, taking place at a garage where Girls Aloud work as auto mechanics. "Long Hot Summer" was promoted through numerous live appearances and has since been performed on two of the group's concert tours. The "upbeat pop tune" received mixed reviews from contemporary music critics; some reviewers thought ...

Coyne states the song could function as a "prequel to the melancholy, ''Til Summer Comes Around'". Billy Dukes of ''Taste of Country'' gave the song four and a half stars out of five, saying that the only criticism is the "early guitar work that runs beneath the song’s first verse" and that "only the grouchiest of grouchies can frown on." Long, Hot Summer Of 1967

In June there were riots in Atlanta, Boston, Cincinnati, Buffalo, and Tampa. In July there were riots in Birmingham, Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Newark, New Britain, New York City, Plainfield, Rochester, and Toledo. The most destructive riots of the summer took place in July, in Detroit and Newark; many contemporary newspapers headlines described them as "battles". As a result of the rioting in the summer of 1967 and the preceding two years, President Lyndon B. Johnson established the Kerner Commission to investigate the rioting and urban issues of Black Americans. History A history of institutionalized unemployment, abusive policing, and poor housing was already present in certain areas of the United States.
