Long Branch Cubans
The Long Branch Cubans (also known as the Newark Cubans and the Jersey City Cubans) were a professional baseball team that played from 1913 to 1916. It was the first U.S. minor league baseball team composed almost entirely of Cubans. Figueredo 2003, p. 107. Several players, including Dolf Luque and Mike González, went on to play in the major leagues. The Cubans played in Long Branch, New Jersey from 1913 to 1915, except for the first half of the 1914 season, when they played in Newark, New Jersey. In 1916, they started the season playing in Jersey City, New Jersey as the "Jersey City Cubans." Later that summer, they moved their home games to Poughkeepsie, New York, where they were usually referred to as the "Long Branch Cubans." In late July 1916 they briefly moved to Harlem and finally to Madison, New Jersey in August. Atlantic League (1914)
The second Atlantic League was a Class D minor league baseball league that operated for one season in 1914. The league had been known as the New York–New Jersey League a season earlier. The league president was Rosslyn M. Cox, who would later serve as the mayor of Middletown, New York. The Poughkeepsie Honey Bugs finished first in the league standings, with a record of 65–31 (there was no postseason). Internal politics and poor financial agreements hindered the league, which made it to the year's end, but folded before it could play another season. It was unrelated, except for name, to the first league with the name. The name has subsequently been used for a contemporary independent minor league. Blue Law
Blue laws, also known as Sunday laws, Sunday trade laws and Sunday closing laws, are laws restricting or banning certain activities on specified days, usually Sundays in the western world. The laws were adopted originally for religious reasons, specifically to promote the observance of the Christian day of worship, but since then have come to serve secular purposes as well. Blue laws commonly ban certain business and recreational activities on Sundays and impose restrictions on the retail sale of hard goods and consumables, particularly alcoholic beverages. The laws also place limitations on a range of other endeavors, including travel, fashions, hunting, professional sports, stage performances, movie showings, and gambling. Jack Calvo
Jacinto "Jack" Calvo González (June 11, 1894 – June 15, 1965) was born Jacinto Del Calvo in Havana, Cuba. He was an outfielder for the Washington Senators in 1913 and 1920. He played in 34 games, had 56 at bats, 10 runs, 9 hits, 1 triple, 1 home run, 4 RBIs, 3 walks, a .161 batting average, a .203 on-base percentage, a .250 slugging percentage, 67 total bases and 19 sacrifices. He died in Miami, Florida. Calvo played Negro league baseball with the integrated Long Branch Cubans in 1913 and 1915 but most of his baseball career was in Cuba. He was the younger brother of fellow Negro leaguer Tomás Calvo.
