London Underground 1996 Stock
The London Underground 1996 Stock is a type of rolling stock used on the Jubilee line of the London Underground. The trains were built by Alstom, GEC Alsthom-Metro-Cammell and entered service in 1997. They are similar to the London Underground 1995 Stock, 1995 Stock used on the Northern line. The original 59 trains were initially built as 6-car trains. In 2005, an additional trailer car was added to lengthen each train to 7-cars and four additional 7-car trains delivered, bringing the total to 63 7-car trains. History The 1996 stock was ordered for the opening of the Jubilee Line Extension (JLE) from Green Park tube station, Green Park to Stratford tube station, Stratford. The original plan was to heavily refurbish the original London Underground 1983 Stock, 1983 stock with similar exteriors and interiors to the 1996 stock, and replace the single-leaf doors with double doors, but this proved too expensive and was abandoned. Moquette
Moquette, derived from the French word for carpet, is a type of woven pile fabric in which cut or uncut threads form a short dense cut or loop pile. As well as giving it a distinctive velvet-like feel, the pile construction is particularly durable, and ideally suited to applications such as public transport. Its upright fibres form a flexible, non-rigid surface, which are constantly displaced to give durability and anti-stain benefits. Traditional moquette fabrics are made from a wool nylon face with an interwoven cotton backing. Origin Moquette originated in France, where it was woven by hand. The standard width was a Flemish ell of 27 inches. There were two finishes: moquette ''velouté'', which had a cut pile like English Wilton, and moquette ''bouclé'', which had an uncut pile like Brussels carpet. Stratford Market Depot
Stratford Market Depot is a London Underground depot located in Stratford in the London Borough of Newham, between Stratford and West Ham stations on the Jubilee line. Constructed in the mid 1990s as part of the Jubilee Line Extension, the site is the main depot for stabling and maintaining the line's 1996 Stock trains, although some trains are stabled at Neasden Depot. History Stratford Langthorne Abbey, a Cistercian monastic abbey was founded in 1135 on the site. The abbey survived until the dissolution of the monasteries in 1538. In 1879, the Great Eastern Railway opened a new wholesale fruit and vegetable market at Stratford to rival Spitalfields Market. This market gave its name to the local Stratford Market train station. Air Suspension
Air suspension is a type of vehicle suspension powered by an electric or engine-driven air pump or compressor. This compressor pumps the air into a flexible bellows, usually made from textile-reinforced rubber. Unlike hydropneumatic suspension, which offers many similar features, air suspension does not use pressurized liquid, but pressurized air. The air pressure inflates the bellows, and raises the chassis from the axle.
