Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy
Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) is a mitochondrially inherited (transmitted from mother to offspring) degeneration of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and their axons that leads to an acute or subacute loss of central vision; it predominantly affects young adult males. LHON is transmitted only through the mother, as it is primarily due to mutations in the mitochondrial (not nuclear) genome, and only the egg contributes mitochondria to the embryo. LHON is usually due to one of three pathogenic mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) point mutations. These mutations are at nucleotide positions 11778 G to A, 3460 G to A and 14484 T to C, respectively in the ND4, ND1 and ND6 subunit genes of complex I of the oxidative phosphorylation chain in mitochondria. Landsitz Lohn
The Lohn Estate (german: link=no, Landsitz Lohn, french: link=no, Domaine du Lohn) is a manor and estate located in Kehrsatz, canton of Bern, Switzerland. It serves as the official estate of the Swiss Federal Council. From 1942 to 1994, the Lohn Estate accommodated the official guests of the Swiss Confederation, which have included a number of heads of States and royalty. It is a Swiss heritage site of national significance. The manor was built in 1782 by the Tscharner family and was designed by the architect Carl Ahasver von Sinner. The estate was acquired in 1897 by the businessman Friedrich Emil Welti. In 1942, it was donated to the Swiss Confederation by Welti's widow in memory of his father, the former Federal councillor Emil Welti. The manor is a two-storey country house designed in the Neo-classical style. Lohn, Texas
Lohn is an unincorporated community in McCulloch County, Texas, United States. According to the ''Handbook of Texas'', the community had an estimated population of 149 in 2000. Geography Lohn is located at (31.3237752, -99.4100566). It is situated two miles west of U.S. Highway 183, near the junction of Farm Roads 504 and 2635 in northern McCulloch County. History The area was first settled by William F. Lohn and his family in 1879. They were joined by several other German families in 1881. Morgan Stacy built a store in the community and ran the post office when it became operational in 1891. A church and flour mill had opened by 1893. A one-room school house was also constructed that year. When Lohn Central School was completed in 1896, smaller schools in the nearby communities of Cow Creek and Salt Gap were consolidated with it. On 1 January 2021 the former municipalities of Casti-Wergenstein, Donat, Lohn and Mathon merged to form the new municipality of Muntogna da Schons. History Lohn is first mentioned in mid-12th Century as ''Laune'' and ''Lune''. In 1219 it was mentioned as ''de Laone''. Geography Lohn had an area, , of . Of this area, 56.5% is used for agricultural purposes, while 35% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 1.5% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (7%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers or mountains).
